Cynthia May (Probst) Haggerty
May 21, 1931 - March 26, 2025
Cynthia May (Probst) Haggerty passed away peacefully in her Washington Township home on March 26th, after being cared for by hospice nurses and her children since December. She was born on May 21st, 1931, and raised in South Bend, Indiana. She loved spending time at her family’s second home, the Fawn River family farm, in White Pigeon, Michigan. Cindy was a 1953 graduate of St. Francis College and married her beloved husband, Thomas Haggerty, in 1955. In 1960, Tom and Cindy moved to West Haven, Connecticut, with their two young boys. They stayed for 19 years as their family grew, then settled in Washington Township, New Jersey, in 1979.
Legacy
Cindy was a devoted wife and mother. Her sewing hobby grew into a home business where she spent five decades providing tailoring services and custom home décor to family, friends and residents of West Haven and Washington Township. In her early 80s, Cindy took up painting pictures of houses. In all, she created several hundred paintings, always at no cost to the recipients. Once all the family’s and friends’ houses were painted, she offered her painting services to people she met on the street, which led 6ABC to feature her in a 2017 news story. Beneficiaries of her paintings and tailoring often still note these beautiful acts of kindness when speaking to her children.
She was generous of spirit and loved to entertain. She hosted annual celebrations for family and friends, including for St. Patrick’s Day, Easter egg decorating, Memorial Day, Labor Day cookouts, Fourth of July, Halloween, and any other excuse she could find to have a party, including ‘unbirthday’ parties.
Family
Cindy, who was a devout Catholic — strong in her faith — has gone Home to join her husband, Tom, in eternal rest. She is survived by her children, Thomas Haggerty, Sean (Jenny) Haggerty, Chad (Terri) Haggerty, and Colleen (Bob) Migeot. Affectionately known as Grandma Puff and Boppy, she leaves behind her grandchildren, Tom (Angela), Shannon (Adam), Abby, Tara (Matt), Kristofer (Chelsea), Noah, Sara, Matt, and Haley; and her great grandchildren, Kaylee, Tommy, Lexi, Mila, Everett, Maverick, Callen, and Kai. She also leaves behind the Ryan family who were not family by blood, but family in heart.
Those who knew Cindy will remember her as a kind, generous and loving soul. She was an incredible lady who epitomized selflessness, devotion to her faith, dedication to her family and a true love of life spent with family and friends. She had a wonderful way of making everyone feel special and loved and always put the needs of others before her own. After the death of her parents, she took in her special needs sister and compassionately cared for her for 52 years.
Cindy’s family is grateful to the nurses at Constellation, Kristi and Jill, for their loving care of Cindy during her transition Home to the Lord.
