Dean "Mr. Music" Arthur Bushnell
April 14th, 1930 - March 28th, 2025
My Song has ended, but my Melody will linger on.
Dean Arthur Bushnell, a beloved musician, educator, and family man, passed away peacefully at his home in Englewood, Colorado, on March 28, 2025, at the age of 94. Born in Columbus, Nebraska, in 1930 to Arthur Clyde and Martha Catherine Bushnell, Dean's life was a symphony of passion, dedication, and love for those around him.
From a young age, Dean's talent for music shone brightly as he played the trumpet, a skill that would shape his life's work and legacy. He pursued his education in music at Hastings College, the University of Nebraska, and the University of Northern Colorado, ultimately earning both his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in music education. For 32 years, Dean shared his love of music with students in the Denver Public Schools, earning the affectionate nickname “Mr. Music.” His commitment to music education inspired countless young musicians and enriched the cultural fabric of the community.
Dean’s high school and college years were unique, in that he played with numerous road bands of the time, racing across the Midwest to make it to a Friday & Saturday night gig, then back to school in time for Monday morning exams. During his high school years, Dean could also be heard bugling the “Call to Post” at Ag Park, horse racing track in Columbus.
In 1950, Dean founded the Dean Bushnell Orchestra, captivating audiences across the Denver area and beyond with his performances. He served in the Army from 1953 to 1956 and continued his service in the Army Reserves for an additional eight years. Dean was always loyal to live music, leading his own band as well as playing with the City Park Municipal Band, National Western Stock Show Band, Bronco Band, Brown Palace Hotel Lobby Band, KEZW Band, the Elitch Garden Trocadero Ballroom Orchestra (with national broadcasts on old AM radio), and backing numerous national talents and shows that would come through Denver. Dean shared in the loyalty and fellowship of the talented Denver music community.
Dean's life was not solely defined by his musical achievements. He enjoyed fishing and camping in his younger years, creating cherished memories with his family & friends in the great outdoors. When needed, Dean was even known to swing a hammer in those early days, building such things as a treeless tree house, workbench, storage cabinets, and refinishing a basement. Dean was a steadfast provider for his family, always ensuring they were cared for and supported.
He is preceded in death by his beloved wife, Deborah Bushnell; his grandson, Sean Bushnell; and his brother, Richard Bushnell. Dean is survived by his first wife, JoAnn Bushnell; his children, Doug Bushnell, Dave Bushnell, Karen Jones, and Britta Conway; and his cherished grandchildren, Dustin Jones, Brendan Conway, and Brice Conway.
A Rosary will be held on May 16th at 10:30 AM, followed by a Funeral Mass at 11:00 AM at Saint Thomas More Catholic Church, with a reception to follow. An Interment Ceremony will take place on May 19th at 2:00 PM at Fort Logan National Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made to the Dementia Society of America or the Colorado Music Educators Association, honoring Dean's lifelong commitment to music and education.
Dean Arthur Bushnell leaves behind a legacy of love, music, and inspiration. He will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
