Richard "Richie" Scordino
December 14th, 1949 - March 29th, 2025
Richard H. Scordino, 75, beloved “Uncle Richie” returned to God in the early hours of Saturday, March 29th at his home and in the presence of family. Originally from North Babylon on Long Island, he moved to Amsterdam NY about 25 years ago with family.
Richie played an active role in raising three children, with whom he lived from their birth through young adulthood. Though known as “Uncle Richie,” he was truly a father figure to them, offering love, guidance, and support throughout their lives.
Richie was a retired mechanic who could find a way to fix anything. He was never one to keep his opinions to himself, and if you knew him, you knew he always had something to say, usually loudly. He was a hard worker, a natural problem solver, and someone who could fix just about anything.
Richie’s passion was cars and racing - he had built more than one race car in his lifetime including his 1957 Chevy that he named “The Force.” He won many trophies, and continued racing after his retirement and up until the end of his life.
Beyond his passion for cars, he enjoyed taking and developing his own photographs, and worked in a camera shop in Babylon when he was younger. He also enjoyed playing electric guitar, drawing, and writing poetry. He was an avid hunter and fisherman, operated a clam boat for some time, and was a certified scuba diver who explored wreckages and taught scuba diving lessons for the Town of Babylon summer programs. He was incredibly creative, lived on his own terms, had a great sense of humor, and always had the best stories to share about his adventures.
Richard is survived by the three children he raised: Stephanie (Peter), Matthew (Renee), Sara and her children Lydia and Daniel, his friend Maria, his mother Mildred, his sister Judith (Dennis), his nephews Daniel (Melissa) and Anthony, his niece Jessica (David), four grand-nephews, and one grand-niece.
A graveside service for Richie will be held at St. Mary's Cemetery, Fort Johnson, on Saturday, April 12, 2025, at 11am with Fr. Nate Resila officiating. A celebration of Richie's life with continue following the graveside service at Swords & Strategy Fencing Club 4751 Route 30, Amsterdam, 12010.
