Gene Vasquez

Gene Vega Vasquez, age 74 passed away on March 21, 2025 at the VA Hospital due to a long battle with cancer. He was happily married to his beautiful wife Sylvia Vasquez for 46 years.

Gene was born on September 22, 1950 in Santa Rita New Mexico. He was the son of Rudy and Josie Vasquez. In 1970, he was drafted into the United States Army where he served 2 years. He was a draftsman in the battalion headquarters and was stationed in Germany. After having been honorably discharged from the Army, Gene attended Western University and TVI Community College where he received an Associate’s Degree in Engineering. He was employed at Honeywell Aerospace where he worked on the F-15 fighter jet computer system. While working at Honeywell he was sent to Japan where he assisted them with their computer systems and fighter jets.

Gene was devoted to Christianity and read the bible often. He will be remembered for his gentle and caring personality and unique sense of humor. Some hobbies that he enjoyed were hunting and fishing. Gene also had a love for music and was a member of a band called The Starlighters. He was their talented keyboard player. Gene was a fighter and defied death many times with his strong determination to live for his family especially his grandchildren. He loved his grandchildren immensely and enjoyed creating memories with them.

He is survived by his wife Sylvia Vasquez; children, Mark Vasquez, Renae Garcia and husband Vincent Garcia; and grandchildren, Dominic Vasquez Garcia and Nathan Vasquez Garcia. He is preceded in death by his father, Rudy Vasquez, mother, Josie Vasquez, sister, Hazel Grijalva, brother, Adam Vasquez, and grandchild Antonio Vasquez Garcia.

The funeral services will be held on Wednesday, April 16. 2025 at Riverside Funeral Home of Albuquerque starting at 10AM.
