Mitchel Curtis Bird
November 4th, 1951 - March 25th, 2025
“Call him Dad, Grandad, Friend — he was strength without words, loyalty without question, and the one who always showed up.”
Mitchel Curtis Bird passed away on March 25, 2025, at the age of 73 after courageously facing many health challenges. Born on November 4, 1951, in Hastings, Nebraska, Mitch was the son of Rolland and Margaret. His family moved to Colorado Springs in 1958.
He graduated from Widefield High School in 1970, where he lettered in both football and baseball. After graduation, he moved to North Carolina with his uncle, and it was there he discovered his passion for linework — a calling that would become a lifelong career.
In 1974, Mitch began what would be a 39-year career with Mountain View Electric Association. That same year turned out to be one of the best of his life — it’s when he met the love of his life, Shirley. Mitch and Shirley were married on June 25, 1976, and began their life together in Colorado Springs. Over the years, they built a strong and loving home, moving where life and work took them — eventually settling in Simla to raise their family. Their greatest joy arrived on July 12, 1978, with the birth of their daughter, Stacie Lee.
Mitch and Shirley built their nest in Simla, Colorado, where Mitch took on the role of foreman for Mountain View. He quickly became a dedicated and dependable part of the community — the kind of person people could count on to get things done. True to his nature, he stepped up wherever he was needed, even serving as Mayor of Simla in the ’90s.
Outside of work, Mitch had a deep love for the outdoors and sports. In the ’80s you could find him on the field playing fast-pitch softball, and in the ’90s he switched to slow-pitch. He coached Stacie’s teams, shared his passion for hunting, fishing, camping, and boating, and could often be found water skiing or teeing off on the golf course. Just as much as he loved playing, he absolutely loved watching all the kids play their sports — cheering them on with pride from the sidelines. And sometimes, he was just sitting around with friends — laughing, talking, and being the steady presence he was known for.
In 2000, Mitch transferred to the Falcon office for Mountain View, where he would finish out the last stretch of his career. In 2002, Mitch and Shirley moved back into a familiar place — the very home Mitch had grown up in, in Security, Colorado. In 2013, Mitch retired to be home with Shirley, devoting himself to her care as her health declined — a final, beautiful act of love in their long life together.
After Shirley passed in 2016, Mitch decided to sell the house in 2018 and head out to Calhan, where he lived simply in his camper and worked as the RV manager at Jolly’s RV Park. He made a lot of friends and good memories out there, but after a few years of RV living, he decided it was time for a change and moved back to Colorado Springs in the spring of 2024.
Mitch was the kind of guy who could talk to anyone. He’d share a laugh, lend an ear, offer advice, or hand you the shirt off his back without a second thought. He had a way of making people feel at ease — whether it was over a cold beer, a quiet moment, or a good story. He didn’t need recognition; he just showed up for the people around him, again and again.
Mitch is survived by his daughter Stacie and her husband Rick; his grandchildren Mariah (husband Caleb), Shaelyn (husband Jorge), Bailee (boyfriend Ryan), Ricky, and Jack; and his great-grandchildren River, Natalia, and Catalina. He is also survived by his siblings Cheryl (husband Jim), Linda, and Dan; sisters-in-law Cindy, Wanda (husband John), and Marilynn (husband Rick); brothers-in-law DeWayne (wife JoAnn) and Gene (wife Patty); as well as a large extended family of nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, and even great-greats — all of whom he loved dearly.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife Shirley; his parents Rolland and Margaret; his in-laws Hoby and Norma; his brother Gary; sister-in-law Clar; niece Debbie; nephew Joshua; and great-niece Katy.
