Rev. Richard Earl Sweeney (1927-2025)
Richard Earl Sweeney was born on December 7, 1927 in Macomb, IL to Dewey and Carmenlita Sweeney. After graduating from Eureka College with a B.S. in American History, Richard went to the College of the Bible, now Lexington Theological Seminary, in Lexington, KY, where he met his future wife, Alice Marie Wendling. They were married on September 23, 1952.
After graduating from seminary with his B.Div. later changed to an M.Div, Richard went on to pastor churches within the Disciples of Christ in Anaconda, MT, Red Oak, IA, Iowa Falls, IA, Canon City, CO, Benton, IL, Carrollton, OH, and Cambridge, OH. Upon retirement, Richard and Alice moved to Springfield, OR where they became active members of Northwood Christian Church.
Richard was preceded in death by Alice, who died in 2020, and daughter Linda Maureen Sweeney, who passed away in 2023. He is survived by son, Michael Sweeney, daughter-in-law Linda Gayle Sweeney, son Dale Sweeney, daughter-in-law Phyllis Sweeney, grandsons Christopher, Ryan, and Dominic Sweeney, and great-grandson Arthur Sweeney.
