Dr. Emmett Carlysle Mathews Jr.

December 28, 1941 – April 3, 2025

 

Dr. Emmett Carlysle Mathews Jr., a dedicated cardiologist, Navy veteran, and loving and proud father and grandfather, passed away on April 3rd, 2025, in Charlotte, North Carolina. During his 83 years of life, Dr. Mathews served with dignity, healed with care and compassion, and lived with purpose. Dr. Mathews is survived by his son, Richard Hunt Mathews (Ellie), his daughter, Susan Slate Mathews-Duvall (Roger), his brother, David Hodnett Mathews, Sr. (Brenda), four grandchildren, and many other loving family members and close friends who will carry his memory forward with pride and gratitude.

 

Born and raised in Richmond, Virginia, Dr. Mathews embodied a lifelong commitment to service. Dr. Mathews proudly and honorably served in the United States Navy prior to serving countless patients during his distinguished medical career in cardiology. For over 50 years, Dr. Mathews devoted his empathy and passion for healing to his medical practices in Albuquerque, New Mexico and Charlotte, North Carolina. Known for his clinical expertise and warm bedside manner, Dr. Mathews was a trusted colleague and source of comfort and strength to his patients.

 

Dr. Mathews was a passionate historian. He was committed to continuing the family legacy of keeping history alive for others to enjoy. Dr. Mathews proudly honored his Virginia roots through his membership and service to The Jamestowne Society and the St. Andrew’s Society. Dr. Mathews was also an avid outdoorsman. He often spent his free time horseback riding, fishing, or camping in national and state parks.  

 

A memorial service will be held at Myers Park United Methodist Church located at 1501 Queens Rd, Charlotte, NC at 2:00 pm on Monday, April 28, 2025. A reception to celebrate Dr. Mathews’ life will follow the service. Dr. Mathews will be laid to rest on Wednesday, April 30, 2025. A graveside service will be held at 11:00 am at Forest Lawn Cemetery located at 8100 Granby St., Norfolk, VA.

 

In lieu of flowers, the family asks for donations to the National Park Foundation, veteran’s organizations, historical societies, or to the American Heart Association. 

Dr. Emmett Carlysle Mathews, Jr.’s presence, will be deeply missed, but his legacy will endure in every life he touched.
