Stephen Jauregui, III
January 8th, 1947 - March 23rd, 2025
Stephen Jauregui III, 78, passed away March 23, 2025, at the Veterans Community Living Center at Fitzsimons. Steve was born on January 8, 1947, in Great Lakes, IL, to Stephen Jauregui, Jr. and Wilma Geraldine Bass Jauregui. As the oldest of 10 children of a Naval officer, he called many places home, including Maine, California and Maryland.
After graduating from Walter Johnson High School in Bethesda, MD, he attended the University of Maryland. He enlisted in the US Army in 1968 and served two tours as an infantryman in Vietnam, where his comrades knew him as “Jag.” After several active duty posts in Germany, Texas, and Pennsylvania, he joined the US Army Reserve and completed a military career, retiring in 2000 at the grade of Sergeant First Class.
In 1974, Steve earned a BA in Economics from the University of North Texas (then North Texas State University), where he met Helen Neilon, and they were married in 1976. In civilian life, he worked in the insurance and retail sectors in Cincinnati, OH, and Philadelphia, PA, and he retired from the Internal Revenue Service in 2007.
Steve’s major hobbies were fencing–in which he competed in tournaments in Europe and the US–and acting in community theater, participating in both of these activities from his college days well into his 70s. He enjoyed political discourse, received a degree in Civil Engineering, and participated in Lifelong Learning courses in his later years. He was also active in the Knights of Columbus, attaining the 4th degree. His singing, even at the office, was legendary, and it was often said that “he never met a stranger.”
Steve is survived by his wife Helen and their four children: Beatrice (Anand Rao), Ellen (Chris Contard), Stephen (Kate Tomlinson Jauregui), and Kitty (Timothy Reimer), and 10 grandchildren. He is also survived by his siblings: Michele Sackman, Jacqueline McFeely, James Jauregui, Theresa Jauregui, Julie Jauregui Holloway, Joseph Jauregui, Katie Lovette, and Melissa Jauregui. He was preceded in death by his brother Timothy Jauregui and his grandson Timothy Contard.
Stephen Jauregui III was a man of strong faith in God, family, and the military. He never wanted another human being to go to war and prayed daily for the safety of those in uniform. He cherished his Brothers of Bravo with whom he served in Vietnam and attended their annual reunions for over 20 years.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Our Lady of the Visitation in Kiowa, CO, on Tuesday, April 29, at 11:00, preceded by visitation at the church beginning at 10:00 and Rosary at 10:30. Graveside services will take place on April 30 at 12:30 p.m. at Ft. Logan National Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be sent to the Lewy Body Dementia Association, lbda.org, or Vietnam Veterans of America, vva.org.
