Beers and Story - South Hadley
William James Barry
December 22nd, 1930 - April 13th, 2025
William James Barry passed away peacefully on April 13, 2025, at the age of 94. Born on Staten Island, New York, on December 22, 1930, he was the son of William and Anne (Garland) Barry.
William proudly served in the United States Air Force for 20 years, achieving the rank of Master Sergeant and serving as a Chaplain Services Supervisor during the Korean War. A highlight of his service was the rare and meaningful opportunity to meet the Pope—a memory he treasured.
After retiring from the military, he worked for the Granby Highway Department and later at Atlas Copco in Holyoke. He also earned an associate degree from Holyoke Community College, showing his lifelong dedication to learning.
William was known for his strong will, independence, and sense of humor. Even in his 90s, he embraced technology—texting and using his computer to stay in touch with family and friends. He enjoyed bird watching, gardening, and cheering on the Boston Red Sox.
He is survived by his children: Ann-Marie Bragiel and her husband, William, of Granby, MA; Robert Barry of Nashua, NH; and Christopher Barry. He also leaves behind four grandchildren—Megan, Molly, Dylan, and Kathryn—and four great-grandchildren: Henri, Quinn, Kourtney, and Kalvin.
William was predeceased by his wife, Barbara L. (Potter) Barry; his son, Patrick James Barry; and his sisters, Rita Voss and Veronica Post.
Family and friends are invited to a calling hour on Thursday, April 17, 2025, from 9:00 AM to 10:30 AM at the Beers & Story South Hadley Funeral Home, followed by a graveside service at 11:00 AM at West Cemetery on West Street in Granby, MA.
In lieu of flowers, donations in William’s memory may be made to the American Heart Association.
