Marvin H. Wiley, affectionately known as “Coach” to generations of students, athletes, and community members, passed away peacefully into the arms of Jesus, leaving behind a profound legacy of service, leadership, unwavering dedication and faith.  Born on September 30, 1932, in Donalsonville, Georgia, Marvin lived a life marked by integrity, steadfast service, and commitment to the betterment of others.

The youngest of six siblings—including a set of remarkable triplet sisters—Marvin grew up in a close-knit family in Donalsonville, where the values of hard work, humility, strong faith, and community were deeply instilled. These principles guided his every endeavor throughout his life.

Marvin proudly served in the United States Navy, where he played baseball and embodied the values of discipline and teamwork that would define his life. After his service, he went on to play professional baseball in the minor leagues for the St. Louis Cardinals, showcasing the same drive and determination that would later mark his coaching and civic leadership. He then attended Troy University, playing football on a scholarship for the Trojans and meeting his lifelong love, Patty—a spirited Troy cheerleader. Their love story blossomed into a lasting partnership that endured until her passing in January 2024.

After marrying, Marvin and Patty began their journey in education in Panama City Beach, Florida, both serving as physical education teachers. In 1960, they moved to Auburndale, Florida, where Marvin would become a pillar of the community for the next six decades.

Marvin took on the role that would define much of his life’s work—Head Football Coach and Athletic Director at Auburndale High School. Under his guidance, the Bloodhounds soared to numerous district championships and state playoff appearances. His players remember him not only for his athletic leadership but for his ability to mold young men of character and resilience.

Marvin’s impact extended well beyond the field. For over 25 years, he served as the Recreation Director for the City of Auburndale, tirelessly advocating for youth programs and public facilities. Simultaneously, he took on the responsibility of “Truant Officer” for Polk County Schools, affirming his deep belief in education and inspiring confidence in young people that they could reach their dreams.

Marvin officially retired in 1998.  In what others might have considered a time for rest, Marvin instead embraced a new chapter of service—as Mayor of Auburndale. From 2004 - 2008, he guided the city with wisdom, a commanding presence, and an unshakable commitment to the people he had always championed. Because of his dedication and commitment to the community, “Coach” has a street named after him right in the center of town—Wiley Drive—and the Auburndale High School baseball field proudly bears his name in honor of his legacy. 

Over the decades, “Coach” has been honored with other awards including “Citizen of the Year” by the Auburndale Rotary Club and Auburndale High School “Hall of Fame”.

Marvin was a member of First United Methodist Church and leaves a faith centered legacy that was instilled at a young age by his family life in Georgia.  

Coach loved to be in and around the water.  He is responsible for teaching countless young people to Swim and Water Ski (the number is likely in the hundreds).  He and Patty enjoyed their retirement years on their boat cruising up and down the Gulf and the Intercoastal waterways.  They also enjoyed time on the Beach at their Treasure Island Condo for over 40 years.

Marvin is preceded in death by his beloved wife, Patty, whose grace and energy matched his own. He is survived by his two devoted daughters: Lisa Tipton and her husband Bill Tipton of Winter Springs, FL, and Charysse O’Donnell and her husband Adam O’Donnell, residing in the San Francisco Bay Area.

His legacy continues through his four grandchildren: Jennifer Butcher (Richard) residing in Ft. Lauderdale, Josh Tipton (Abby) of Land O’ Lakes, Meredith DeWitt (Coleman) residing in Orlando, and Sydney O'Donnell (19) a student at Auburn University; and four great-grandchildren: Judah Tipton (4), Cameron Tipton (1½), Mason Butcher (1½), and Hudson DeWitt (10 months).

Marvin is also survived by his beloved sister, Ouida Carr (95), who still resides in Donalsonville, Georgia—a living link to his roots and the place where it all began.

Coach Wiley’s enduring influence on the city of Auburndale, its youth, and its spirit cannot be overstated. He taught more than sports—he taught discipline, respect, and how to live a life of purpose. His presence, leadership, and love will continue to resonate through the lives he touched and the community he helped shape.

A Memorial Service and Celebration of Life (Tailgate Party) will be held at 4:00pm on Sunday, April 27th at Paradise Pavilion -- Camp Margaritaville, 361 Denton Avenue, Auburndale, FL 33823. 

Because this is a celebration for a man who loved his city and schools, please honor Coach by wearing AHS attire or the colors Blue & Gold.  Jeans are appropriate if desired.  Following the service in Paradise Pavilion, please stay for a Tailgate celebration where we will serve traditional tailgate food and of course, his favorite, Bud Light.  There will be a cash bar and music. RSVP for Tailgate dinner with # attending to [email protected].
