Darrell Matthews Jensen, affectionately known as DJ, passed away peacefully on March 20, 2025, at Colusa Hospital, leaving behind a legacy of love, memories, and a passion for life. Born on June 12, 1931, in Willows, California, to Una Margaret Peacock and George Enos Jensen, Darrell was the cherished sibling of Blanch Una Henrie, William Von Jensen, and George Wayne Jensen.

In 1951, Darrell answered the call to serve by enlisting in the Armed Services. His courage led him to the Korean War, where he bravely fought for his country. In 1953, he sustained injuries that marked a defining moment in his life, leading to a nine-month recuperation at Letterman Hospital in San Francisco. For his service, Darrell was awarded a Purple Heart and received an honorable discharge, reflecting his dedication and sacrifice.

Following his military service, Darrell pursued higher education at Utah State University, honoring his mother’s alma mater. He earned a bachelor’s degree in history and devoted 32 years to educating future generations as a beloved teacher of geography, world history, and photography at Corning High School. During a transformative one-year sabbatical, Darrell traveled the globe, exploring diverse cultures across all seven continents, enriching his perspective and passion for photography.

Upon retiring from teaching, Darrell returned to his roots in Willows and spent his later years in Orland. He had a profound love for classical and big band music, and photography was not just a hobby; it was a canvas for his creativity. Whether capturing moments at weddings, parties, or local high school football games, Darrell could always be found with a camera in hand. He cherished hosting friends and family for slide shows and movie nights, sharing his adventures and favorite memories.

Darrell was a true friend, nurturing lifelong connections through letters, postcards, and phone calls. His caring spirit and genuine interest in others will leave an indelible mark on all who knew him. He will be profoundly missed.

A celebration of life honoring Darrell will be held on June 14, from 10am to 12pm at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 125 Modoc St. in Orland, CA. Light refreshments will be served as we gather to remember and celebrate the remarkable life of DJ.
