June 5, 1934 – April 11, 2025

Barbara G. Compton (née Thomas), 90, of LaFayette died Friday, April 11, 2025, after a brief illness.

She is survived by daughters Molly Herwood (Steven) and Julie Ryder, and son Carl “Chip” Compton, Jr. She is also survived by six grandchildren: Edward “EJ” Ryder III; Crystal Clifford (Kyle); Samuel Herwood; Hollyanne Compton (Jordan); Micaela Compton (Dan); and Rebecca Herwood-Mussen (Zachary); three great-grandchildren: George, Charlie, and Luna, as well as her sister-in-law Leona E. Compton Thomas and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by Carl A. Compton, her beloved husband of 68 years, son-in-law Edward “Easy” Ryder, her parents Robert and Florence Thomas, and seven siblings.

She was a founding member of the LaFayette Alliance Church where she was the church historian and continued to be a Prayer Warrior until the very end. She was literally a homemaker, from helping her husband build their house to keeping their home open to family and friends. She often babysat for many children and was a volunteer lunch lady at Faith Heritage School while her granddaughters attended. She was a prize-winning, published poet and once sang in a Billy Graham volunteer choir during a crusade in Syracuse.

Calling hours will be held at the LaFayette Alliance Church on May 10, 2025, 9:00-11AM, immediately followed by a celebration of life. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a contribution to St. Camillus (https://st-camillus.org/giving/ ).
