George Wewers
March 10th, 1930 - April 7th, 2025
George John Wewers passed away peacefully on April 7, 2025, at the age of 95. George was born on March 10, 1930, in Morrison Bluff, Arkansas, to John and Rose Wewers. His youth was spent working the family farm with his three brothers and three sisters. He attended high school at the Subiaco Academy in Subiaco, Arkansas, and remained a faithful contributor to the school his entire life. At the age of 21, he ventured west where he eventually resided in Idaho Falls, Idaho, and began his career as a talented craftsman working with sheet metal. It was here that, over a cup of coffee and a "Spudnut," he was goaded into asking a pretty little waitress for a date. That fateful coffee, donut, and date resulted in a 66-year marriage to Barbara Montess Hebdon. George and Barbara moved to Twin Falls, Idaho, and lived there until 1999. Along with their five children, they attended St. Edward’s Catholic Church where they were involved in St. Edward’s School, the Knights of Columbus, and St. Vincent de Paul. When they moved to Boise, they became parishioners of St. Mark’s Catholic Church, where they made many good friends and dedicated many hours to adoration.
George loved to fish and hunt. He had the best stories to tell about these adventures with his kids and grandkids. One of his favorite things to do was to haul his trailer to Terrace Lakes and set up camp on his lot. He and his family spent many weekends enjoying time together swimming, fishing, boating, hiking, and riding motorcycles. George’s green thumb was always apparent in the harvest of tomatoes, grapes, and zucchini, which he shared with family and friends. George was an artisan in his trade. He was recognized in his retirement by the Sheet Metal Workers Union for his devotion to his craft. After Barbara passed away in 2017, George continued to maintain his home and garden until several illnesses and memory loss necessitated his living in a memory care home, where he was visited by family every day.
George is survived by his five children: Carol McGee, Mike Wewers, Bryan (Bridgette) Wewers, Paula (Tim) McMannon, and Brent Wewers; nine grandchildren: Karen (Shawn) Compton, Paul (Naclaysia) McGee, Julie (Craig) Bell, Ally (Brendan) Daniels, Joe (Elaine) Wewers, Jameson McMannon, Caitlyn McMannon, Jessica Layne Wewers, Nathan (Sarah) Wewers; nine great-grandchildren: Ryan Compton, Malik and Makena McGee, Jaelyn and Kaison Bell, Cole and Jake Daniels, Erika Wewers, and Axle Overgaard; two sisters-in-law: Stella Wewers and Milly Wewers; one brother-in-law: Tony Reith; and numerous nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his beloved wife, Barbara, his parents, and his six siblings.
A family gathering is scheduled for Monday, April 28, at 6:30 p.m. with Vigil/Rosary to follow at 7:00 p.m. at St. Mark’s Catholic Church. A funeral service will be on Tuesday, April 29, at 11:00 a.m. at St. Mark’s Catholic Church, 7960 West Northview St., Boise, Idaho 83704. This service will be followed by a reception. Burial will follow the reception at Cloverdale Cemetery, 1100 N. Cloverdale Rd. in Boise.
In lieu of flowers, please donate to your favorite charity or to St. Vincent de Paul.
The family would like to thank Kristin Hyde and the caregivers at Overland Court for their loving care of our dad and the hospice team for their gentleness and compassion in helping him and all of us through his final days. Also, many thanks to the Risen Christ Catholic Community for keeping George connected to the Catholic faith he so loved. Along with our mother, George (Dad, Grandpa, Papa) will be sorely missed, but the memory of his dedication to friends, family, faith, and his irreplaceable sense of humor will live on.
