Wilford "Ray" Bowes
September 17th, 1945 - April 12th, 2025
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Wilford “Ray” Bowes on April 12, 2025. Born in South Boston, Virginia, on September 17, 1945, Ray devoted his life to his family, his work, and his community.
A respected and successful businessman, Ray owned and operated Shirlington Texaco/Shell for 53 years. His dedication and entrepreneurial spirit earned the admiration of both customers and employees, who remember him as a brilliant and generous leader.
Ray was a devoted husband to the love of his life, Barbara Ann Bowes, for nearly 57 years. Together, they built a life grounded in love, faith, and family. He was a proud and loving father to his four children: Laura Ann Wiant (Fritz Wiant), Lisa Kay Lujan (Chris Lujan), Angela Lynn Getzewich (Brian Getzewich), and Brian Ray Bowes (Kendra Bowes), and a cherished grandfather to nine grandchildren: Kyle Lujan, Jakob Wiant, Tyler Lujan, Joseph Wiant, Katelyn Lujan, Karissa Bowes, Nora Getzewich, Savannah Bowes, and Julia Getzewich.
Ray’s life was marked by a strong work ethic, a passion for golf, and an unwavering loyalty to his favorite Washington sports teams. He was known for his generosity and was always willing to lend a hand to anyone in need. His quiet strength, kindness, and selflessness touched the lives of many and will not be forgotten.
Ray is survived by his sister, Linda Miller, and joins in eternal rest his beloved wife Barbara, his parents Willie Junious “Buck” Bowes and Lessie Mae Bowes, his brother Billy Bowes, and his sister Mildred Bradham.
A service to celebrate Ray’s life will be held at St. Matthews United Methodist Church Annandale, VA on April 25, 2025, at 11:00 AM, with a reception to follow in the church atrium. All who knew and loved Ray are welcome to attend.
In lieu of flowers, the family is asking that contributions be made to Alzheimer's Foundation of America in memory of Ray's wife, Barbara. https://alzfdn.org/donate/
