Walter "Walt" Harvey Smith, Jr
April 19th, 1940 - March 18th, 2025
Matthew 11:28-30 Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.
WALTER HARVEY SMITH JR
With heavy hearts and profound sadness, we announce the passing of our father, Walt, who passed peacefully surrounded by family March 18, 2025 at the age of 84. A devoted father, husband and lifelong friend to many, Walt lived his life with purpose and compassion.
Shortly after graduating high school, he served a term for the United States Navy but his passion was to become a fireman just as his grandfather. He was employed by the Oregon City Fire Dept from 1964 until his retirement in 1990. Walt spent his life serving his community with bravery and compassion. His courage in the face of danger was matched only by his kindness and willingness to help others. Whether at the scene of a fire or volunteering for community events, his commitment to others was unwavering. He was a true hero, both at work and in life.
Beyond his work as a fireman, Walt was a skilled contractor, building homes and making improvements that touched the lives of those around him. He took great pride in his work, always ensuring that every project was completed with care, quality, and craftsmanship. His hands created, and his heart touched everything he built.
Outside of his professional life, Walt was an avid outdoorsman. He found peace and joy in fishing, camping, hunting, and creating countless memories with his family and friends. Whether out ocean fishing, hiking through the woods, or sharing stories around a campfire, he was happiest when surrounded by nature and the people he loved.
What truly defined Walt was his constant HUGE smile. He just had a way of making every person feel special, and his laughter was contagious. No matter the challenge or the circumstance, he always found a way to stay positive and bring joy to those around him. His warmth, generosity, and unwavering love for his family/friends are the legacies that will live on in all of us.
