Adrienne Mohrig
November 2nd, 1932 - April 18th, 2025
Adrienne (Adrie) Rubel Mohrig, age 92, died on April 18, 2025 in Springfield, MA. Born Anna Adrienne Rubel on November 2, 1932 in Boston, Adrie grew up in Needham, MA. She was the second of Charles Adrian and Elizabeth (Betty) Rubel’s five children. She fondly remembered playing with her brothers in the Charles River and helping to care for her younger sisters. During the war years, she planted potatoes on the family’s land and helped to gather and clean the eggs of their chickens. In 1942, they spent time in Washington DC while her father helped the war effort as a map reader. Around then, Adrie learned to knit blankets for war refugees—and knitting remained a lifelong pastime. Adrie attended Sarah Lawrence College for three years before marrying James (Jim) Slocum in 1954 in Chocorua, NH. She transferred to the University of Minnesota, graduating with an early education teaching certificate. For a short time, the couple lived in the Los Angeles area while Jim learned more about the grocery business. They returned to live in Deephaven, MN, where their two children, Charlotte and Carolyn, were born. Adrie was a deeply loving, engaged, and caring mother. Throughout her life, she supported and encouraged her daughters and their families. IN 1964, Adrie and Jim changed the direction of their lives. The family moved to New Haven, CT, for Jim to become a United Church of Christ (UCC) minister. In 1967, they moved to Waseca, MN, to serve the First Congregational Church. In addition to raising two children, teaching Sunday School, and other duties of being a minister’s wife, Adrie took care of several foster children, including one child for 1½ years. That experience led to her involvement in organizations supporting people with intellectual disabilities. In 1975, they moved to Plato, MN, to serve St Paul’s UCC. Adrie worked as an aide in a special education class in Glencoe, MN. During family vacations in Bayfield, WI, Adrie was a good sport about sailing but she much preferred picking blueberries, making applesauce, and hiking. She was a creative cook, experimenting with healthy vegetarian foods before they were popular. In 1988, Adrie and Jim retired and moved to Northfield, MN, divorcing a few years later. Adrie became very involved in First UCC, serving as moderator twice, as well as vice-moderator, deacon, and chair of committees that helped with visiting shut-ins and serving meals at funerals and church celebrations. Adrie had a strong faith and served her communities graciously and generously. Through church board meetings, Adrie got to know Jerry Mohrig. They married in 2001. After Jerry retired from teaching Chemistry at Carleton College, they enjoyed traveling. They lived in Northfield until 2022 when care for Adrie became more difficult and she moved to be closer to her daughter Charlotte in Springfield, MA. Adrie and Jerry remained lovingly connected via video screens and visits. Adrie will be deeply missed by her husband, Jerry; brother Sandy Rubel (Peggy), sister Holly Weiss, and sister-in-law Mary Rubel; children Charlotte Schechter (John) and Carolyn Fure-Slocum (Eric); two grandchildren Anna Taylor (Eddie) and Jacob Fure-Slocum (Sidney Beaumaster); great-grandchildren Zayah, Georgia, and Rowan; step-children, David Mohrig (Chiu-Mi Lai) and Sara Carney (Sean); step-grandchildren Nathaniel and Hannah Carney; and many nieces and nephews. Adrie was predeceased by her parents; brother Peter and sister Judy; and former husband Jim. A memorial service for Adrie will be held on Saturday, June 28, at 2pm, at First UCC, Northfield, MN. Donations in Adrie’s name may be made to the First United Church of Christ in Northfield, the Community Action Center of Northfield, or Loomis Lakeside at Reed’s Landing in Springfield, MA.
