John J. Tierney February 7, 1928 – April 19, 2025
John J. Tierney, age 97, of Tucson, Arizona, passed away peacefully surrounded by family on April 19, 2025. He was born on February 7, 1928, in Clifton Springs, New York.
John proudly served his country in the U.S. Navy during World War II, enlisting at just 17 years old. Following his service, he began a long and fulfilling 33-year career with the Southern Pacific Railroad. Starting as a brakeman in 1953, he rose through the ranks. Moving to Tucson in 1978 he became Superintendent of the Tucson division. He retired in 1986 as Assistant to the Vice President.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 56 years, Nancy; his son, Tom; his parents, Catherine McCabe and Patrick Tierney; and his brothers, Vincent, Jim, and Clarence.
John is survived by his sister, Catherine, dear friend Bayla, and by his children: Terry (Sherry), Mary Spradley (Les), Trisha, Eileen Green (Mike), John (Angie), and Kathy Hegstrom (Eric). He was a proud grandfather of 13 and great-grandfather of 12.
A man of deep faith, John was a dedicated member of Saints Peter and Paul Catholic Church. He also gave generously of his time, volunteering with the St. Vincent de Paul Society. He found joy in spending time with his family and friends and was an avid golfer throughout his life. John loved to read but especially loved human interaction learning about others and their life stories.
John will be remembered for his devotion to family, his service to others, and his unwavering kindness and generosity.
The family would like to thank his loving caregivers at Fairwinds and the hospice team from Bayada.
Visitation Monday April 28, 1-3 p.m. at Adair Oro Valley. Rosary Tuesday April 29, 9:30 followed by funeral mass at 10:00 at Saints Peter and Paul Church.
In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made in his memory to St Vincent de Paul, Saints Peter and Paul Church, and Diabetes Association of Tucson.
