In Loving Memory of Ferrill Loren Derrick
September 20, 1936 – April 5, 2025
With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Ferrill Derrick, our beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, uncle, brother and friend. Ferrill passed away peacefully at home in the early hours on April 5th surrounded by the love of his family.
Born on September 20, 1936, in Baker, Oregon, Ferrill lived a life full of grit, laughter, and unwavering devotion to his family. As a young man, he proudly served in the United States Air Force during the Korean War as a crew chief, working on B-47’s and later the “new” B-52. His service was a source of pride and helped shape his strong and determined spirit.
In 1955, he met the love of his life, Joan Sharps, at a dance in Fairford, England. They were married on May 11, 1957, beginning a partnership that would span nearly 68 years—full of love, laughter, and life’s many adventures. Together, they raised three children: Linda, Carol, and Wayne.
Ferrill had a fierce work ethic. He helped build the Mossyrock Dam and over the years, he hauled everything from logs to cars to people and even started his own logging truck company. He retired after a long and proud career hauling cars with the Teamsters Local 741 out of Kent, WA. —leaving behind a legacy built on determination and hard-earned success.
He is survived by his loving wife, Joan; his children; his six grandchildren: Julie, Candace, Rourke, Brace, Derrick, and Clarke; and his nine great-grandchildren, who brought him joy and pride. He is also survived by his half-siblings Dawn and Harold. He was preceded in death by his sisters Ronalee and Marlene, and half-siblings Pearl and Diana.
Ferrill was a bit rough around the edges—a classic “smart-alec” with a sarcastic streak and a wicked sense of humor. He loved to tease, to laugh, and to keep people on their toes. But beneath that rugged exterior was a kind and loyal man who loved deeply, valued hard work, and showed up when it mattered most. He was the kind of man who would give you the shirt off his back—though he might crack a joke about it first.
He will be remembered with love, laughter, and a thousand stories that reflect the full, vibrant life he lived. We will miss his stubborn wisdom, his sarcasm, and the unmistakable twinkle in his eye when he made someone laugh.
A life like Ferrill’s doesn’t fade—it echoes through generations.
Services will be held at Tahoma National Cemetery, 18600 SE 240th St. Kent WA 98042 on May 19th, 2025 at 1:00 pm. A memorial will follow - location TBD.
