For he will command his angels concerning you to guard you in all your ways. -Psalm 91:11

Alan Michael Kossman, age 78, of Bluffton, SC (formerly of New Lenox, IL) made the “last call” on the train into heaven on Tuesday, April 22, 2025.

Alan’s first stop in life was on August 26, 1946 in Chicago, IL. Born to the late Frank Kossman and the late Lillian (Weiss) Filipiak. He attended school in Blue Island, IL and Tampa, FL and graduated from Dwight D. Eisenhower High School (1964). Alan attended Eastern Illinois University, leaving to work and start his family. Alan worked as a brakeman, then engineer, and conductor for Rock Island Railroad, Chicago & Northwestern Railroad and then retired from Metra after 42 years of service. Trains were his passion and lifelong career. In 1978, Alan worked the last run on The Peoria Rocket. In 2008, Alan made it to #1 on Metra’s seniority list. He loved his job and the camaraderie with his co-workers and passengers that led to many lifelong friendships.

Alan became the father to six children by age 32. He selflessly prioritized his family and always supported their education, activities and everyday life. His focus on creating memories gave rise to family game nights, unforgettable holidays, traditions and incredible gatherings. His love was evident in the attention he gave to every detail, and then some. Onion bread, onion dip, shrimp dip, buttered popcorn, barbecued ribs and Bloody Marys were some of his signature specialties. His dedication and commitment to family exemplified his Christian values of kindness, compassion and forgiveness.

Being a grandfather was the role he played BEST, as “Pop.” Pop was epic! He would travel multiple times a year between IL and SC to be present and support his grandchildren’s milestones, sporting events and performances. He made life FUN and would dress the occasion for holidays. He always had a camera ready. It was guaranteed that careful love and consideration was given to all matters, whether it was in his thoughtful gifts or by his best guidance and advice. Pop was very active and always up for a good game-cards, board games, ping pong, beach and backyard games- any activity, really. He was always ready and willing. Pop had a way to always make each of his grandchildren feel special as his love for them, and them for him, was immeasurable.

Alan had a great work ethic that he modeled and passed on to his children. He was a master of all projects. He believed the best way to get something done right was to do it yourself. He accepted help, as long as it was done “his way.” And, of course he’d be there to supervise over your shoulder!

Alan loved soda shop pop, country, and Jack Johnson music the most. He loved rooting on his grandchildren's teams best and was also an avid Chicago sports fan-especially the White Sox and Bears. He’d watch the Cubs, if only to hope for a loss. He created lifelong memories in the many concerts and sporting events attended with family.

Alan’s tender heart and compassion for animals was infinite, often taking extensive measures to help even wild or stray ones. His black lab, Lexi and cats Chloe, Chessie, Clara and Jessie were some of his best companions throughout his life. Extended family pets gravitated towards him and often the visiting ones did not want to leave.

Alan’s smile was big, but his heart was bigger. After a fun-filled weekend, Alan unexpectedly collapsed while hiding Easter eggs. He boarded his last train in the role he loved best-being a Pop!!!

Alan will be deeply missed and is survived by his loving children, Dr. Alan J. Kossman, Kathleen (Brian) Eichhorn, Kristen (Craig) Mateski, Mark (Jennifer) Kossman, Michael (Jaime) Kossman. His treasured grandchildren, Connor Kossman, Colin Kossman, Emily (David Spinney) Eichhorn, Brian Eichhorn II, Abigail Eichhorn, Brianna Kossman, Evalyn Mateski, Samuel Mateski, Lillian Mateski.

His brother, Gary (Margie) Kossman of Sanford, FL.

He will also be dearly missed by his extended family members, many friends and neighbors, and his immediate family’s friends.

Preceded in death by his parents, son, Brian Kossman, and twin granddaughters, Kathryn and Sophia Mateski.

Cremation rites have been accorded and a celebration(s) of Alan’s life will be held at a later date. Charitable contributions can be made to a shelter or cause that helps animals.
