In Loving Memory

Iris Holmes Baston, 71, was welcomed into Heaven on April 29, 2025 at her home, peacefully surrounded by her loving family.

Born on December 23, 1953, in Conway, South Carolina, Iris spent her childhood exploring outside, riding her bike or lounging on the beach until the sun went down.

Iris was a proud graduate of Columbia Bible College (Class of 1976). She later earned a master’s degree in elementary education from the University of South Carolina. Her love for children led her to serve as a dedicated teacher in Richland District One, Lexington District Two, and Lexington District Four. She poured her heart into each student, always seeking to uplift and encourage.

A faithful member of Northside Baptist Church, Iris lived out her strong Christian faith daily. After retiring from teaching in 2008, Iris dutifully volunteered at Northside’s Mission Columbia food pantry for 16 years. She was a devoted wife, loving mother, proud grandmother, and generous friend. Known affectionately as MeeMaw, she cherished her family deeply and never missed an opportunity to bring them together—especially around the pool or at her kitchen table. She was always the last to sit down at meals, making sure everyone had what they needed. She would send you off with her beautiful smile and a heartfelt “buh” (bye). She was also an avid supporter of all her kids’ and grandkids’ sports, cheering, and dance events.

Iris also had a special place in her heart for her three Pomeranians—Zeke, Zoe, and Zaxby—who brought her constant joy, comfort, and companionship.

Iris is survived by her beloved husband, Steve Baston; her three children: Kerri Ray (Matt), Matt Baston (Lauren), and Kimberly Walsh (Tom); and her eight cherished grandchildren: Case, Tanner, and Quintin Ray; Ryan and Millie Blake Baston; and Henry, Oliver, and Joni Walsh.

Her family extends their deepest gratitude to Amedisys Hospice for their compassionate care in her final days.

Iris’s life was a beautiful testimony of faith, love, and service. Her legacy will live on in the countless lives she touched with her warmth, strength, and unshakable belief in the goodness of God.”

Funeral services will be held at Northside Baptist Church on Saturday, May 3rd, 2025, at 12pm, with visitation from 11am – 12pm prior to the service at the church. Burial will follow the service at Woodridge Memorial Park in Lexington.
