Alan Fairbanks Lovely was born on April 1, 1945 to Weldon and Christine Lovely in Plainville, Massachusetts as the youngest of six children.  After graduating from King Philip Regional High School, he moved to Golden, Colorado where he earned a degree in mining engineering from Colorado School of Mines.  He was drafted into the United States Army in 1967 and sent to Vietnam in 1968.  He was honorably discharged in 1970, and returned to Colorado to begin his career in mining and raise his family.  He moved the family in its various forms from Colorado to Nevada to Nebraska to Virginia to West Virginia to California to Colorado to California to Massachusetts to Delaware and finally back to Colorado in 2022. He died peacefully, surrounded by his loved ones, on April 26, 2025 in Fort Collins, Colorado.

Alan was known for his love of family and friends, his surface-level gruff demeanor combined with his tender and loving heart (his grandchildren affectionately called him “Grumpy”), his incredibly strong work ethic (including an uncanny ability to dig holes and ditches in any kind of soil), his bright blue eyes, his signature "Jack on the rocks with a Coke back", his prowess at cribbage and tendency to claim "you cheat!" when he lost or "ya smell somethin?" when he skunked you, his straightforward manner of expressing strong opinions, his personal and private faith in God, and his colorful stories about growing up on a farm, mining around the world, and raising amazing children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren.  He will be missed by many people far and wide.

Alan was preceded in death by his loving and loyal wife of almost 30 years, Lorraine Lovely.

Alan is survived by his former wife, Jan Friedlund, and their son Torgun Lovely (along with Torgun’s wife Kathy, and their children Hannah and Mathias).

Alan is survived by his sons with Amy Moore, Jeremy Lovely (along with Jeremy’s children Parker and Sofia), and Robert Lovely (along with Robert’s wife Sindhu, and their children Oscar, Remy, and Micah), and his step daughters Wendy Lovely (along with Wendy’s husband Phil, and children Kerriann and Nick and grandchildren Charlie, Avery, Lily, Jackson, Kaley, and Leah), and Belinda Tucker.

Alan is  survived by his step children with Lorraine, Randy Hamilton (along with Randy’s wife Andrea, and children Amanda and Alexa), Jayne Hamilton (along with Jayne’s fiancé Bill Brock), and Ben Hamilton (along with Ben’s wife Paula, and their children Daniel, Kate, Meghan, and Kiley).
