Kathleen Van De Veere, aged 89, died on Monday, 28 April 2025 in her home of 35 years, in Bailey, Colorado. Her “cabin in the woods, at the end of a lane,” was the realization of a lifelong dream for Kate. She died as she had wished – at home in her beloved Colorado mountains.

Kate was a warm-hearted caregiver, and she pursued a career as a registered nurse – earning her degree in nursing from University of California, Berkley. She served as a high school nurse in California, a public health nurse in California and Colorado, and as a nurse with the American Cancer Society in Denver. Her final position was as the home health care coordinator with the Veterans Administration – a calling that she relished. She loved Veterans and showed it in her care for them at the VA and then, following her retirement, by knitting warm caps and scarves which she donated – hundreds of them! – to homeless Veterans in Denver. She also passed those caps and scarves to all the first responders in and around Bailey, CO as well as to anyone that she figured needed one! There are many, many folk walking this earth today – and for many years to come – warmed by the generosity of her spirit.

Kate was deeply spiritual and her faith in God helped her as she navigated her end-of-life journey. She died with her family around her and God – and her parents and husband – eagerly awaiting her arrival.

Predeceased by Warren Craig Van De Veere, her husband and high school sweetheart. Survived by her daughter, Lt. Col. (Ret.) Mary Van De Veere Deatherage, and her husband, Mr. Wayne Deatherage, both of Fayetteville, GA; and her son, Joseph Earl Van De Veere, of Los Angeles, CA.

Graveside service and interment with her husband will be held on 5 May 2025, at St. Francis Church of Assisi in Estes Park, Colorado.

As we remember Kathleen Van De Veere, we celebrate a life that was not only long, but profoundly meaningful. Her spirit will continue to inspire and guide those she left behind - reminding us all to cherish our dreams and strive for the life we envision.
