Mementos

It is with both profound sadness and heartfelt joy that we announce the passing of our beloved Don;  a devoted husband, loving Dad and “Papa” to his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

He went to be with his Lord and Savior on April 28, 2025, surrounded by his loving family.

Don was born in Winston-Salem, NC to Johnny Brooks and Ruth Steelman on April 13,

1939.

He was known as an outstanding high school athlete at Mineral Springs High in Winston-Salem and Winter Park High in Florida. Don was a 1961 graduate of Wake

Forest University, where he met his wife, Patricia. For many years he was a consultant in the insurance and textile industries, and in “retirement” he worked for Enterprise

Holdings. Don was also a selfless community leader and was President of the North Carolina Exchange Club. Beyond his accomplishments in the business world and

community, Don wanted to be known as the consummate “family man,” which he was considered by all who knew him.

Don was preceded in death by his parents, Johnny Brooks and Ruth Steelman, as well as his siblings: JB Steelman, Dennis Steelman and Gail Steelman.

Don is survived by his loving wife Patricia B. Steelman and his two sons D. Gray Steelman, Jr (spouse Kecia) of Mooresville, and Brian B. Steelman (spouse Cita) of

Charlotte; granddaughters Avery Franco (spouse Flavio); great grandson Augusto Franco; Lindsay Steelman; and Gabrielle Steelman. Grandsons Reece Steelman;

Lucas Steelman (spouse Tameria), great granddaughter Reina and great grandson Emory; grandson Charlie Steelman and great granddaughter Serena.

Don was married to the love of his life Patricia for 65 wonderful years, and his devotion to her was more than apparent to family and friends that witnessed their deep love and devotion to each other every day of their marriage.

Our loss is great, and we will hold our cherished memories of him tightly, for he had a

profound impact on our lives.

A service to celebrate Don’s life will be held at 2pm on May 16, 2025 at the Sharon Presbyterian Chapel in Charlotte, NC. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to

Sharon Presbyterian Church in South Charlotte

At Hankins & Whittington Funeral Service, nestled in the historic heart of Dilworth, we have provided families in the Charlotte area with customizable memorial services for many years. Our services are crafted to honor your loved ones in ways that are both deeply meaningful and healing. Our rich history began in 1946 when Irvin W. Hankins and James B. Whittington took the reins of the Crouch Funeral Home. The growth of our service and the community's support led to our move in March 1963 to the current location—once St. Luke’s Lutheran Church, built in 1930. Our chapel, a cherished historic landmark within the storied Dilworth neighborhood, is renowned for being the only funeral home in Charlotte graced with its own chapel, echoing with decades of history and serenity....
