Upon graduation in 1964, he was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the United States Marine Corps. His combat troop was the first to land in Vietnam on March 8, 1965. He served two distinguished combat tours—first with the 3rd Reconnaissance Battalion in 1965, and later with the 3rd Battalion, 1st Marines from 1968 to 1969.
