George Samuel Lybrand
April 3rd, 1937 - May 3rd, 2025
George Samuel Lybrand of Edisto Island, SC joined the Church Triumphant on May 3rd, 2025. He was born on April 3rd, 1937, in Aiken, SC to Harvie Samuel Lybrand and Jennie Owens Lybrand. He is a Class of 1959 graduate of The Citadel Military College of SC and served his country in the Coast Guard. He loved God, his church and family. He was a founding member of the St. Andrews Presbyterian Church in Irmo, SC. He was an active member of the Presbyterian Church on Edisto Island as well as the Edisto Island Lions Club. He spent his career selling real estate in Columbia, SC and on Edisto. Sam also loved gardening and was an award-winning Camelia grower. He enjoyed spending time with his wife, Joyce, fishing and exploring the creeks in their boat. Edisto was his heart and soul. He spent countless hours hunting, fishing, exploring, and sailing his Edisto paradise growing up. This led him to write many books about the history of Edisto and what it was like for him in those early days on this beautiful island. He was an amazing storyteller. He loved talking to people about Edisto and God. Sam was preceded in death by his parents, his brothers Thomas Harvie Lybrand and David Ladson Lybrand, and his first wife Ida Margaret Myers Lybrand. He is survived by his spouse Joyce Hills Lybrand and his children, James Samuel Lybrand (Melinda), Amy Lybrand King (Matt), John Myers Lybrand (Liz), Karen Peterson (Bill), Pamela Welch (Kyle), Marie Sample (David), Scott Abrams (Josie), 15 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren.
