Obituary for Eugene Dever
Gene Dever, 82, passed away at home on May 5, 2025, in Summerfield, Florida. Born on September 28, 1942, in Queens, New York, Gene lived a life marked by dedication to his family, commitment to his work, and a deep appreciation for the simple joys of life.
Gene was raised in Fairfield, Connecticut, where he graduated from Roger Ludlow High School. He went on to earn a bachelor's degree from the University of New Haven, laying the foundation for a long and successful career. For four decades, Gene worked in the steel industry, culminating in his role as General Manager at Ryerson Steel in Wallingford, Connecticut. His leadership and work ethic left a lasting impression on colleagues and associates throughout the industry.
Gene and Ginny raised their family in Cheshire, CT. They cherished their time with their Gourmet Group for almost 30 years. Gene especially enjoyed golf with many of the guys as they would get together each Saturday to play.
In 2007, Gene and Ginny moved from their home in Cheshire, Connecticut and settled in the Del Webb community in Summerfield, Florida. Gene enjoyed his time playing golf (he was most proud of the two times he made a hole in one!) as well as running the men's golf group on Mondays and was active in the Men’s Golf League. Gene was a member of the Veteran’s Club and served in several capacities. He also proudly served as the Chairperson of the Parish Council and as a Eucharistic Minister at St. Theresa's Catholic Church.
Beyond his professional and personal accomplishments, Gene was known for his sense of humor. His quick wit came so naturally and would leave family and friends asking him to retell his stories over and over. He was an absolute joy to be around and was kind and gracious to everyone he met.
Gene cherished time with his wife Ginny. Their bond began on July 27, 1968, and was one of enduring love and partnership. He absolutely adored her. He took great pride in his daughter Lisa (Carleton) and son Brian and found immense joy in being a grandfather to Brookelyn, Caitlin, Reagan, and Colton Cotner. Gene loved being the ‘favorite uncle’ to many nieces and nephews. Gene was predeceased by his sisters, Patsy (Maury) Davitt and Sue (Rich) Briggs.
Gene’s legacy is one of warmth, strength, and unwavering devotion to those he loved. May his memory bring comfort to all who knew him.
Gene’s family will be celebrating his life privately. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Theresa’s Soup Kitchen, 11528 US-301, Belleview, Florida 34420.
