Julia Matias, cherished mother, grandmother, aunt, and sister, passed on May 6, 2025. She was 86.
She was born on October 19, 1938, in Brooklyn, N.Y. to Julio and Manuela Cabrera. Her work in education brought her much joy and she adored raising her children and being a big part of her grandchildren’s lives. She had a quick wit and the biggest smile.
She is survived by her children, Renee Sheehan, Julie and Jonno Hanafin, her grandchildren, Brianne, Andrew and Valerie, sister-in-law Carolyn Cabrera, and her niece and nephews, Paul and Stacy, Mark and Jeannine, and Monique. Grand niece and nephew Lauren and Louis.
A memorial service will be held in New York in the near future.
