Ned Alan Bumgarner
October 12th, 1951 - May 9th, 2025
Ned Alan Bumgarner of Blythewood, SC, passed away at the age of 73, on Friday, May 9, 2025, surrounded by his loving family.
Born on October 12, 1951, in Marion, OH, to Millard and Martha Bumgarner, Ned spent his childhood in a small rural town of Ohio helping on the family farm, excelling as a student-athlete, and creating mischief with his brother, Ben Bumgarner. These adventures later transformed from cherished stories to legendary tales. His parents and sisters, Brenda Davis and Connie Isler, provided unwavering love and support, shaping Ned's strong character and deep love for family.
In high school, Ned met the love of his life, Terry Bumgarner. After graduating, he played basketball for West Point, graduating in 1974. Known as the "Gentle Giant," Ned forged lifelong friendships and built a supportive network that lasted until the end.
Ned and Terry married and lived a life they were immensely proud of. After his time in the Army, he was a successful businessman, dedicating many years to York International. He traveled to numerous countries and states, and his family fondly recalls visiting every Civil War battle site along the East Coast—so many, in fact, that they could probably give guided tours in their sleep! Upon retiring to South Carolina, Ned cherished creating memories with his grandchildren, who remember their Papa with love and laughter.
Ned is survived by his wife, Terry Bumgarner; daughters, Traci Simo (Craig) and Stefanie Castles (John); and son, Neal Bumgarner (Stephanie). He leaves behind his beloved grandchildren: Braydon, Caleb, and Ethan Castles of South Carolina; Mikayla and Chloe Bumgarner of Maryland; and Jack Simo of South Carolina.
Ned was a storyteller who also enjoyed hearing a good story from others. He was immensely proud of his children and grandchildren, always inspiring them to strive for greatness to make him proud. His unwavering belief in their potential was a constant source of motivation and love. He taught them valuable lessons, such as reading maps, understanding the unchanging nature of math, and handling pressure with calmness. His wisdom and guidance were sought by family, friends, and coworkers alike. Ned touched many lives and will never be forgotten.
There will be no services at this time and a celebration of life will be announced later. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to a charity of your choice.
