Philip Lynn Prater
January 31st, 1964 - April 24th, 2025
"Sometimes it’s the people no one imagines anything of who do the things that no one can imagine." - Alan Turing
Philip Lynn Prater, beloved husband, devoted father, and dedicated public servant, passed away peacefully on April 24, 2025. Born in Kearney, Nebraska, Phil lived a life defined by service, curiosity, and an unwavering love for his family.
Phil served proudly in the United States Air Force for 30 years, continuing his lifelong commitment to national defense as a Deputy Division Chief with NORAD and USNORTHCOM/J435. His work was marked by dedication, integrity, and insight, leaving a lasting impression on colleagues throughout his distinguished career.
Beyond his professional accomplishments, Phil found his greatest joy in his family. He was the loving husband of Sherry Prater and the proud father of son Trevor Prater and daughters Riley Prater and Logan Thompson (Jaida). Together, they built a life filled with laughter, adventure, and cherished memories. Some of Phil's favorite pastimes were exploring trivia or sharing a quiet evening at home with his family, Phil’s presence made everything brighter—and always a bit more interesting.
Though private by nature, Phil was known for his subtle wit, encyclopedic knowledge, and fondness for quotes. He often signed off emails and conversations with lines that offered wisdom, humor, or reflection—each one a glimpse into the thoughtful man behind the quiet demeanor.
Phil also leaves behind his sister, Andria Van Gorden (Marvin), as well as extended family, colleagues, and countless friends who were touched by his kindness and character.
He leaves behind a legacy of service, strength, and steadfast love. He will be missed beyond measure, but his stories, sayings, and spirit will live on in the hearts of all who had the honor of knowing him.
A funeral service will be held in his honor at Pikes Peak National Cemetery at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, May 23rd.
"Sometimes it’s the people no one imagines anything of who do the things that no one can imagine." – One of Phil’s favorites.
