In Loving Memory

James Wilburn Stanley, 87, passed away on May 12, 2025. Born in Kernersville, NC, he was the firstborn son of the late Flavel Robbins Stanley and Clay Stanley. From a young age, Jim had a natural talent for art, which he nurtured through studies in Connecticut.

He had a lifelong passion for painting, travel, and all things transportation—especially trains. Jim began his 47-year career in journalism by persuading the Winston-Salem Sentinel to hire him. He worked through its transitions to the Winston-Salem Journal and JournalNow, embracing new technologies and illustrating stories with skill and creativity.

A generous and kindhearted man, Jim supported many charities and was a proud member of the local Model Train Club. His home featured an elaborate N-scale train layout, delighting children and guests alike, especially during the holidays.

He is survived by his brother Jack Stanley; nephew Dwayne Stanley; cousin Stan Stigall; best friend Deborah Byerly; surrogate daughter Sallie Herrin and surrogate granddaughter Olivia Herrin; and many extended family members and dear friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, his niece Toyna Stanley, and sister-in-law Leigh Stanley.

Special thanks go to his friend Daryl Jennings and his devoted caregivers Teresa Crotts, Karen Prudencio, Angela Haneline, Vicki Eudy, and Cynthia Benge—his angels.

The family will receive friends on Tuesday, May 20, 2025, from 12:00–1:00 PM at Pierce-Jefferson Funeral Services, 213 W. Mountain St., Kernersville, NC, with the service beginning at 1:00 PM, officiated by Gary Styers. Interment will follow at Eastlawn Gardens of Memory.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Trellis Supportive Care, Liberty Baptist Church (Winston-Salem), St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, or a charity of your choice.
