Dale B. Thein, a cattle rancher, educator, and master of the art of “good enough,” passed away peacefully on May 1, 2025, in Lakewood, Colorado, at The Ridge at Pinehurst. He was 85.

Born in Sturgis, South Dakota, Dale began life in a house his father built—without electricity or running water. Those early years instilled in him a frugality that would become legendary. He often tackled DIY projects with a unique flair, famously asking, “Is perfect good enough for ya?” when questioned about his unconventional methods.

In the summer of 1961, at a raucous “tunnel party” in an abandoned mine shaft, Dale—an awkward cattle rancher—met Marilyn, the daughter of a Black Hills gold miner. Both aspiring teachers, they fell in love quickly and married within months. Their 56-year marriage was filled with adventure, laughter, and unwavering partnership until Marilyn’s passing in 2017.

After earning his degree from Black Hills State University, Dale and Marilyn embarked on a seemingly crazy journey to Afognak Island, Alaska, where they taught elementary school in a three-room schoolhouse—Dale handling grades 3 through 5, and Marilyn teaching 1st and 2nd. Their Alaskan adventure sparked a lifelong passion for teaching. Upon returning to Colorado, Dale earned his master’s degree from the University of Northern Colorado and spent much of his career at Lookout Mountain School, working as both a teacher and therapist for troubled youth.

In retirement, Dale couldn’t sit still. He spent two decades flipping houses, managing rentals, and returning each summer to his beloved South Dakota ranch to prepare for cattle season. He identified first and foremost as a cattle rancher and found joy in the rhythm of ranch life.

Dale wasn’t particularly religious, but he had an unshakable belief in the goodness of people. He treated everyone with kindness and respect, regardless of their background or beliefs. To Dale, a person’s character mattered more than any label, and he lived that philosophy every day. He was known for his generosity, his boundless curiosity, and his uncanny ability to strike up a conversation with anyone—sometimes turning strangers into lifelong friends.

He is survived by his sons, Tim (Michael) and Shelby (Danielle), and his six adored grandchildren: Cody, Jesse, Kaylynn, Ryan, Jacob, and Natalie. He was preceded in death by his beloved Marilyn.

A celebration of Dale’s life will be held on June 5 from 4 – 7 PM at the Clayton Club (233 Clayton St, Denver, CO 80206 · 303-551-1600).

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests raising a glass in his honor—preferably while swapping stories and maybe bending a few nails on your next DIY project.

Dale will be deeply missed and fondly remembered for his kindness, humor, and the love he shared so freely.
