James Kowalski
October 15th, 1952 - May 9th, 2025
Jim Kowalski, 72, died unexpectedly May 9, 2025 at Crouse Hospital. The son of Elsie and Bill Kowalski he is survived by his brother Bill of Buena Vista, Colorado, and cousin “my other brother” L.J. Freitag.
Jim spent his life on the south side of Syracuse and attended Van Duyn Elementary School, Our Lady of Lourdes, Christian Brothers Academy (’70) , Penn State University (’74) and Syracuse University College of Law (’77).
He was a parishioner and usher at Our Lady of Lourdes and Our Lady of Hope.
Jim managed an H&R Block office before opening a private law practice from his home.
A fervent fan of Penn State and SU athletics, he also suffered with the Yankees and Manchester City. He loved history, politics, religion and the Beatles. No one can remember a Trivial Pursuit game he ever lost.
Jim will be remembered most for the loving care he gave to his parents in their final years.
As he developed health issues he moved to Maple Downs, a senior retirement facility in Fayetteville, where he met the love of his life, Nancy Greer. Family and friends agree these were some of the happiest times of his life. He loved the community, the activities and especially the relationships he formed.
A calling hour will be held at Our Lady of Hope church, 4845 S. Salina St. in Syracuse on Friday, June 6, 2025 from 10am -11am. Mass will begin at 11am, burial to follow at the Onondaga Valley Cemetery.
