The Island Funeral Home & Crematory
Sherwin "Skip" Trumbull Haskell, III
March 30th, 1945 - May 17th, 2025
Sherwin “Skip” Trumbull Haskell III, 80, passed away peacefully at home on Hilton Head Island on May 17, 2025, surrounded by his loving family.
Skip was born in Savannah, Georgia in 1945 and was the first child of long-time Hilton Head residents Millie and Trum Haskell. He grew up in New Canaan, Connecticut, and after his time at Wake Forest University, he was proud to serve his country as part of the United States Army before completing his schooling at Rutgers University. He spent many years in Atlanta before moving to Hilton Head where he and his wife, Mary Lou, worked and enjoyed “Island Life” for over 20 years. As a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and brother, he touched many lives with his steady presence, positive outlook, abundant patience and eternal optimism.
Skip enjoyed working in the financial world, but his interests extended well beyond the office. A lifelong fan of all things Wake Forest, he carried his school spirit with pride and was rarely seen without his Demon Deacons ballcap. His real passion was golf—whether playing, teaching, watching, or working. Fittingly, the game bookended his life, with caddying as both his first job and his last. After more than a thousand caddie rounds, Skip retired from May River Golf Club where he found joy hanging out with his buddies in the caddie shack and being part of the sport he loved.
Skip is survived by his beloved wife, Mary Lou; his children, Marion Zion, Trum (Meredith) Haskell, and Margaret (Angelo) DiBiase; his stepsons, Kevin (Heather) O'Connor, Brian O'Connor, and Shawn (Darlene) O'Connor; and 14 adored grandchildren. He is also survived by his sister, Debby (Andrew) Calhoun, nephews Drew (Kara) Calhoun and Brad (Gretchen) Calhoun and a circle of extended family and friends who will remember him with affection and admiration.
In keeping with his love of both sports and life’s enduring spirit, Skip often reminded those around him: “It ain’t over till it’s over.” – Yogi Berra
