Beloved wife, mother, grandmother, aunt, sister and friend, Vallie Ann Hillard Strednak died peacefully on May 11, 2025, in Lady Lake, Florida at the age of 82.  Val was preceded in death by her husband Joseph Strednak, sister-in-law Magdalene Calabria and brother James Duncan Hillard.  Aptly, her last day was Mother’s Day, as she cherished both her role as mother and her own mother, Vallie Hillard, so fully.  Her children, Joseph Strednak and Megan Young (Terry) are more than grateful for spending one more Mother’s Day with her.  “Mog” is also survived by her grandchildren Hayden, Max and Lainey.  In addition, she leaves behind sisters Elle Miller, Emily Evans (Bill), and sister-in-law Glenda Hillard.  Joining them are scores of nieces, nephews, cousins and lifelong friends who mourn her loss, but also celebrate her life.

Vallie grew up in Conneautville, Pennsylvania and graduated as valedictorian at Conneaut Valley High School.  She then attended Edinboro University, where she majored in education and minored in the pursuit of her husband Joe, who turned out to be the love of her life.  She embarked on a career wherein she taught one of the hardest subjects (math) to the hardest grade (seventh).   Her commitment never wavered even as it required every ounce of positive spirit that she possessed in spades.

Val loved to share her home with friends, family and out-of-towners.  Dinners reverberated with stories and laughter, often at herself, playing off Joe’s humor in perfect harmony.  In fact, those harmonious sounds were common as Val could burst into song at any moment.  Val spent her retirement welcoming guests to her Florida home, where she golfed, swam, read, thrifted, did puzzles, and, lately, wrote poetry.  All those lucky enough to enjoy Val’s stuffed cabbage (including Joe’s Slovak relatives) won’t soon forget it.  Val’s love of all things Christmas was legendary, especially the music, which played all year long.  Val was always thinking of others, sending notes and cards, often just because.  It’s the memory of these moments when her loss will be felt the most.

Val noticed all the little things that make life worthwhile.  The birds, the flowers, the kind gestures, and the Godwinks, as she called them.  Her children will remember her mix of high expectations and loving support fondly.  Others, including strangers, will not forget the nice lady who noticed their great outfit and appreciated their sense of humor.  Often, these same strangers became friends.  This continued in her last weeks in stores, doctors’ offices and eventually hospice.  Ultimately, Val’s faith in God guided her throughout her life.  A favorite verse sums it up nicely.  Blessed are the pure of heart, for they shall see God.

All are welcome to a Celebration of Life at Hiers-Baxley Funeral Home in The Villages, Florida on June 28 at 11:00 am.  A reception with refreshments will follow.
