Courtney Josephine Schmidt
October 15th, 1996 - May 16th, 2025
It is with profound sadness and loving remembrance that we announce the passing of Courtney Josephine Schmidt, age 28, of Calhan, Colorado. Courtney passed away on May 16, 2025, in the compassionate care of UCH Anschutz Hospital in Denver, Colorado.
Courtney was a 2016 graduate of Calhan High School and later attended Pikes Peak Community College. A proud member of 4-H, she showed pigs and chickens and had a deep love for animals. She especially enjoyed horseback riding in her youth.
During her time in California, she was active in the Rainbow Girls Club and Girl Scouts of America, always attending meetings and activities alongside her beloved sister, Jessie. Her creativity blossomed through floral arrangement classes at school and cake decorating, a passion that led her to enroll the family in a class at JoAnn’s so she could proudly enter her creations in the El Paso County Fair.
Courtney expressed her artistic spirit through drawing and painting portraits of her dogs and was an avid puzzle enthusiast. She loved crafts of all kinds and was always creating something beautiful to keep her hands and heart busy.
One of Courtney’s favorite places was Zapata Falls in the San Luis Valley, where she loved hiking and enjoying the beauty of nature. It was a place that brought her peace, joy, and a sense of wonder.
Known for her boundless generosity, Courtney always thought of others first. She cherished spending time with her family, especially during their treasured Saturday game nights. Her kind heart and joyful spirit touched everyone around her.
Courtney is survived by her parents, William F. (Loretta) Schmidt of Calhan, Colorado, and Cherith Greenwood of California; her siblings, Sarah (Randal) Geisler of Whitesboro, Texas, Jessie Schmidt of Calhan, Colorado, and Ron Wise of Texas; and Barbara Pottberg of Calhan, Colorado. She is also lovingly remembered by many cousins, aunts, uncles, and friends.
She is preceded in death by her paternal grandparents, Leroy W. Schmidt and Charlotte A. Schmidt; maternal grandmother, Jaris Wise; aunts Artie Mae Howlett and Rose Marie Pottberg; and uncles Stoney, Matt, and Bever Pottberg.
Courtney was a member of the Calhan United Methodist Church, where she was baptized in 2024. Her church family was dear to her, and she found great joy and peace in her faith.
