Vivian Miller

Vivian A. Miller died on April 26, 2025, at The Preston Health Center, in Hilton Head Island, South Carolina.  She was 96.

Vivian was born on July 23, 1928, in New York City to Lilian and Charles Asplund.  She graduated from Hunter College High School, Barnard College and Columbia University Law School.  After practicing law on Long Island, she moved to Washington, D.C. to begin a thirty-year career in labor law with the National Labor Relations Board.  Vivian argued cases before all thirteen of the United States Courts of Appeals.

In 1971, she married Thomas W. Miller Jr., who was the Director of Information at the NLRB.  After they retired, Vivian and Tom moved to Hilton Head Island where Vivian became active in the civic life of this recently incorporated town.  She held office in several community organizations, most notably, the League of Women Voters where she sat on the board for eleven years and served as president.  She was a graduate of Leadership Hilton Head.

After living in Sea Pines for thirteen years, Vivian and Tom moved to The Cypress in 2000.  They traveled often and especially loved the south of France and Vancouver, British Columbia.  Their home reflected Vivian’s love of books and Chinese art.  Vivian was generous and kind, thoughtful and funny.  She nurtured her family and her many friendships, made throughout her life. 

Tom preceded Vivian in death in 2012.

Vivian is survived by her step-daughter, Tammy Trocki ([email protected]), and son-in-law, Martin Trocki, both of Garrett Park, Maryland, and her grand-daughter, Elena Trocki, of Aberdeen Maryland.

A private memorial to celebrate Vivian’s life will be held June 7, 2025, at the Cypress in Hilton Head Plantation.  Interment will be private.  Gifts of remembrance may be made to the Volunteers in Medicine Clinic, 15 Northridge Drive, Hilton Head Island, SC 29926. Islandfuneralhome.com
