Ruth Marie Wieler Krug
October 16th, 1927 - April 20th, 2025
Ruth Marie Wieler Krug, 97, of Seminole, FL died peacefully on April 20, 2025, Easter Sunday, in her room at Freedom Square Health Care Center with her son Richard by her side. Born and raised in Springfield Gardens, Queens, NYC, she graduated from Andrew Jackson High School. Ruth worked for a time at LaGuardia Airport until her marriage to Frederick Richard Krug, also of Springfield Gardens. Ruth and Fred moved to nearby Rosedale and raised 3 children. They retired to Seminole in 1979.
Ruth was a lifelong Lutheran active in three congregations: Bethany Lutheran Church, Springfield Gardens, NY, Lutheran Church of Christ, Rosedale, NY, and Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd, Seminole. Through the years, she taught Sunday School, sang in the choir, assisted in worship, and was active in Lutheran Church Women. She was also a member of the Eastern Star.
Ruth was outgoing, gregarious, strong-willed, loving and caring, devoted to family, church, and friends. She enjoyed baking, reading, music (the Big Band/Swing of her youth, pop, patriotic, and later classical), helping others, and getting together with family and friends.
During her 12 years living at Freedom Square she was affectionately called “Grandma Ruthie” and was known by many staff and residents alike, along with her signature call “yoo-hoo!” She will be deeply missed.
Ruth, a child of the Great Depression and World War II, was the last of her generation in her family. Born on the day the first talking picture premiered (in NYC - Al Jolson in “The Jazz Singer”), she overcame polio as a small child, recalled as a 9 year old waving to the passengers in the gondolas of the Hindenberg (dirigible) as it flew over her home on the way to Lakehurst, NJ, where as it docked burst into flame, and in her secretarial work at LaGuardia, was honored to interview Gertrude Ederle, the first woman to swim the English Channel.
Ruth was preceded in death by her parents William and Anna (Fallmann) Wieler, sister Gertrude (Frank) Wilwol, brother William (Marjorie) Wieler, lifelong friend (born 6 days later across the street) Lenore “Lawshun” Picard, husband Fred Krug, son Frederick Richard Krug, Jr., and daughter Nancy Ruth (Bill) Wey. Ruth is survived by her younger son Richard (Will) and grandson Bryan (Kristin) Wey and great grandchildren Owen and Connor, along with nieces and nephews.
Ruth’s Memorial Service will be on Saturday, October 25, 2025 at 10 am at Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd, 10891 102nd Ave. N., Seminole, FL, 33778, with burial of her cremains in the church’s memorial garden immediately following. The service will be livestreamed (YouTube @goodshepherdmusic9820, www.facebook.com/mygoodshepherd).
In lieu of flowers memorial contributions can be made to Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd (mygoodshepherd.net) or Shepherd Wellness Community, 4800 Sciota St., Pittsburgh, PA 15224 (swconline.org), where her son Richard serves as Executive Director.
