Susan Mellgren
1943 – 2025
Sue Mellgren, a woman known for her boundless kindness, quick wit, and unwavering devotion to her family and community, passed away peacefully on May 20, 2025, at the age of 82.
Born in Omaha, Nebraska in 1943 to Charles Withnell and Elise Matzen, Sue spent her early years surrounded by the love of her family, including her brother Kent. In 1955, the Withnells moved to California, where Sue would graduate from Westchester High School and embark on a life filled with meaning, laughter, and love.
It was in California that Sue met her soulmate, Don Mellgren. The two shared a strong and joyful marriage, eventually settling in Sheridan, Oregon to raise their children, Christa and David. Sue poured her heart into their home—one full of music, warmth, and an open-door spirit. She took care of her family with fierce love and gentle hands. Don never had to cook a meal or make his own lunch because Sue had it covered.
Sue spent her life helping others, both in her work and in countless quiet acts of generosity. She was the type of person who made people feel seen and valued, someone whose laughter could brighten even the hardest of days. She believed in kindness, lived it fully, and shared it freely.
Faith played a steady and central role in her life. Sue was a devoted member of Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Willamina, Oregon, where she served faithfully on the church council for more than 20 years. Her involvement wasn’t just a duty—it was a joyful commitment to a community she loved deeply.
Sue is survived by her children, Christa and David; her grandchildren, Jacob and Stacey; and her great-grandson, Grahm. She also leaves behind a legacy of love, generosity, and an infectious sense of humor that lives on in the stories and hearts of those who knew her.
She will be missed more than words can say—but remembered with deep affection, endless gratitude, and many smiles.
In lieu of flowers, the family invites donations to be made in Sue’s memory to Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Willamina, Oregon—a place that held her heart.
