Mrs. Barbara Louise Hunchar (Strittmatter), 79, of Matthews, NC, passed away on June 2, 2025, at her residence in Matthews Glen Retirement Community due to complications of Multiple Sclerosis, which she bravely battled for almost 60 years.

Barbara was born on January 7, 1946, in Philadelphia, PA, to her loving parents, Isabel (Woodring) and Howard Strittmatter. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of over 50 years, William R. Hunchar, Jr. She is survived by her only child, Denise Bambrick (Hunchar), son-in-law Brendan Bambrick, and beloved grandsons Ryan, Thomas, and William Bambrick, all of Charlotte, NC. She is also survived by her brother, Barry Strittmatter, of Plymouth Meeting, PA, as well as several nieces and nephews.

Barbara grew up in Southwest Philadelphia and graduated from John Bartram High School in 1964. Barbara and Bill married in 1965 and lived most of their lives in Eastern PA, including the Philadelphia, Allentown, and Hazleton areas. Barbara worked as a secretary for various companies including Breyers Ice Cream, Berger Construction, and The Keystone Job Corps. She was also a friendly “lunch lady” for the East Penn School District.

In 2005, Barbara and Bill retired to Sun City Hilton Head in Okatie, SC. Barbara often said it was the happiest time in their lives. They quickly made new friends, enjoyed the warm weather, traveled, and participated in various card clubs and activities. Barbara was also an active member of Low Country Presbyterian Church in Bluffton, SC. She enjoyed knitting and was involved with a charity where she knitted cancer caps. Always a Philly girl, Barbara was a big Philadelphia Eagles fan and never missed a game if she could help it. She was also a huge fan of Neil Diamond, puzzles & games, the show Survivor, HGTV, and Fox News. In 2022, Barbara moved to Matthews Glen to be closer to her daughter and family. Once again, she made several new friends in the "card room" and was quickly a well known and loved neighbor to many.

Diagnosed with MS in her early 20’s, Barbara chose to live her life with the spirit of never giving up and met each new obstacle with determination and a smile. Barbara's strength, warmth, and kindness was well known and admired in each of the communities in which she lived. She was loved and adored by her family and friends and will be deeply missed.

A memorial will be held at Matthews Glen at 11:00 am on July 11 to celebrate Barbara's life. She was a lover of animals. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the CMPD Animal Care and Control (alma mater of her beloved granddog, Mr. Pickles), 8315 Byrum Dr., Charlotte, NC, 28217.
