John Michael Carmichael
June 22nd, 1936 - June 2nd, 2025
John Michael Carmichael, 88, beloved husband of Janice Ann Behringer Carmichael, passed away on Monday, June 2, 2025.
Born in Washington, PA, on June 22, 1936, Mike, as he was affectionately known, was the second oldest of five sons to the late Paul and Beatrice Rosing Carmichael. A proud graduate of Penn State and the University of New Mexico, Mike earned his master’s degree in electrical engineering. He was a Veteran of the U.S. Navy before embarking on a remarkable career as a Developmental Engineer with IBM. He was instrumental in the creation of the inkjet printer, played a key role in the formation of Lexmark, and was part of the UofK “Committee of 101”.
In addition to his devoted wife, Janice, Mike is survived by his daughter, Brenda Carmichael Kindler (George) of Louisville; his son, Brian Scott Carmichael (Jeri) of Murfreesboro, TN; his sisters-in-law, Judy Berglund Carmichael and Mona Diane Showalter Carmichael; his brothers, Walter David “Spook” Carmichael (Barbara) and James Trent “Butch” Carmichael (Donna); his grandchildren, Casey Kindler McGlone (Dalton), Paul C. Carmichael, Chase A. Kindler (Rachel), Megan R. Encalada (Kelvin), Sara K. Carmichael, and Matthew A. Carmichael (fiancé Josie Millington); and his great-grandchildren, Liam Atlas Kindler and Aria Elizabeth Kindler. He was preceded in death by son Paul Lee Carmichael and brothers, Paul Denney “Denney” Carmichael and Wray Scott “Jake” Carmichael.
The family would like to express their heartfelt thanks to Hospice of the Bluegrass and Jason Smith for their compassionate care.
A celebration of Mike’s life will be held on Saturday, June 14, 2025, from 1:00pm to 4:00pm (Military Honor presentation 3:30pm) at Clark Legacy Center, Brannon Crossing. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Studio Players, Ronald McDonald House, or St. Elizabeth Ann Seaton Catholic Church.
