Gisela Hauert of Parker, Colorado, passed away peacefully, Thursday, March 6, 2025, at Hospice of Denver. She was 77.
The daughter of Gustav and Senta Hauert, she was born June 25, 1947, in West Germany. She emigrated to the US, with her family in 1952.
She graduated from East High School in 1965, and began studies at University of Denver that fall. After earning her BA in German and Russian Language, she entered the Navy in 1969, and finished Naval Guided Missiles School. She continued her college career through the 70s and 80s, studying Geology, and German Language and Literature, and Cartographic Design, earning a Masters Degree in Library Science at DU. She was always learning and enjoyed engaging her mind, whether it was through formal education, or through personal research.
Gisela met and married William Hood English while she served in the Navy, stationed in Virginia, in 1970. They had a 13-year marriage filled with happy adventures, and remained friends.
After her first marriage, Gisela renewed her childhood friendship with Walter John Keller. Gisela and Walt were married in Denver in 1984. They both enjoyed various artistic pursuits during their careers, and continued learning and creating after retirement. As animal lovers, they cherished their various pets, throughout their life together. They loved to travel, and visited China, Australia and New Zealand, Germany, the Baltics and Eastern Europe, and Hawaii. Gisela continued to travel after Walt passed in 2018.
Gisela also volunteered her time, throughout her life. She shared her knowledge and passion for history at her most recent docent position at the Highlands Ranch Mansion, and at the American Historical Society of Germans From Russia Denver Metro Chapter.
A warm and friendly person, Gisela was inquisitive, intelligent and self-motivated. She enjoyed many creative endeavors, but was known for her skill in knitting and needlework. She developed many, enduring friendships through her arts.
Gisela will be missed for her warm, endearing, and resolute personality, her love of animals, her wish for peace and happiness for her family and friends.
Survivors include her brother, Friedhelm Hauert (w. Laura Hauert) of Waldport, Oregon, her sister-in-law Bernadine Hauert, Aurora, Colorado, her niece and caregiver Rennetta Nikolic and her family, and many other nieces/nephews, great-nieces/nephews, great-great nieces/nephews.
There will be a memorial service at Fort Logan National Cemetery. June 27, 2025, 9:00 AM. In lieu of flowers, contributions in her memory may be sent to The Cat Care Society, here https://www.catcaresociety.org/donate/
