William "Bill" H. McKenzie, Jr.
January 27th, 1947 - June 6th, 2025
William H. McKenzie, Jr., 78, of The Villages, Florida (formerly of Durham and Windsor, Connecticut), passed away on June 6, 2025, in The Villages, Florida.
Bill was born in Hartford to William H. McKenzie, Sr., and Bernice Berzenski McKenzie of East Hartford on January 27, 1947. He graduated from East Hartford High School in 1965, where he played basketball and baseball, and attended University of Connecticut for two years.
He proudly served his country in the U.S. Army, enlisting in 1967 and serving in Vietnam for a total of 18 months. He later taught computer operators at Fort Lee, Virginia where he attained the rank of Sergeant E-5 and supervised over five hundred computer operators. Upon returning home, Bill completed his Bachelor of Science degree at Central Connecticut State University.
On May 26, 1973, he married the love of his life, Carol Ann (Flynn), at St. Mary’s Church in East Hartford. They recently celebrated their 52nd wedding anniversary. Together, they raised two sons: Timothy Scott McKenzie (Nicole) and Kevin Patrick McKenzie (Jessica), and were blessed with three grandchildren; Grace, Kyle, and Leah, who brought immense joy to his life.
Known affectionately as “Mac,” Bill worked for Aetna for a total of 30 years. During a break in his employment with Aetna, he also worked at Computer Sciences Corporation in East Hartford, CT. Mac was known for his quick wit, sense of humor, and playful banter. He lived in East Hartford for 10 years, Durham for 24 years, Windsor for 5 years, and most recently resided in The Villages, Florida, for the past 13 years.
A consummate family man, Bill was actively involved in the lives of his children. He loved coaching his sons’ baseball teams and never missed a game, whether in high school or college. He passed on his passion for golf to both of his sons, introducing them to the game at an early age and sharing countless cherished hours together on the course as members of the Blue Fox Run Men’s Club in Avon, CT. It was also here that Bill enjoyed many rounds of golf and lasting friendship with his two dear friends, Paul Ciotto and Wayne Smyth. For those fortunate enough to have golfed with Mac, you might recall his favorite saying after a tough hole: ‘Swing smooth and enjoy the day’—a reminder that the best part of the round was still ahead.
Bill was also an active member of Notre Dame Church in Durham, CT, and participated in fundraising efforts for Xavier High School, where his sons attended.
Bill is survived by his beloved wife Carol; his sons Tim and Kevin; his grandchildren Grace, Kyle, and Leah; his sister Gail McKenzie of Texas; his brothers Thomas McKenzie (Denise) of
Pennsylvania and Donald McKenzie (Tracy) of Connecticut; and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents and by his infant son, Scott Patrick McKenzie.
Honoring Bill’s wishes, funeral services and his burial with full military honors at Florida National Cemetery in Bushnell, will be private. Memorial donations may be made to https://support.woundedwarriorproject.org
