**Obituary for Richard Peter Midgley**

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Richard Peter Midgley, a beloved husband, father, and educator, who left this world peacefully on June 10, 2025, at the age of 81. Born on January 24, 1944, in Brooklyn, NY, Richard was a passionate individual whose influence extended far beyond his immediate family.

Richard devoted his life to education, having graduated from the University of Maryland, College Park, in 1966 with a Bachelor of Arts in English, followed by a master’s degree from the same institution. His teaching career began in the Fall of 1966 at Robert Goddard Middle School in Seabrook, MD, where he taught social studies, grammar, and English. He later moved to Benjamin Tasker Middle School in Bowie, MD, where he inspired countless students in his 8th-grade English classes until his retirement in the Spring of 2010.

Richard’s impact on the lives of his students was profound, not only as an educator but also as a mentor. He took great pride in coaching the school baseball team, guiding several players to go on and play in the major leagues, among them Scott Wade and James Stewart. An enthusiastic athlete himself, Richard enjoyed a fulfilling amateur career in softball, even competing in the Men's Softball World Championship. His wife, Sandy, was his unwavering supporter, rarely missing a game.

Outside of the classroom and the field, Richard was known for his kindness, generosity, and infectious humor. He had a particular passion for collecting baseball cards and sports memorabilia, as well as deep love for spending time with family. His energetic spirit and thoughtful demeanor made him a cherished presence in the lives of those who knew him.

Richard is survived by his loving wife, Sandy Midgley; his son, Michael Midgley; his daughter-in-law, Kayla Midgley; and his dear cousins, Felice Marrazzo and Jeannette Angelo.

A visitation will be held at St. Matthias Catholic Church, located at 9475 Annapolis Rd, Lanham, MD, on June 20, 2025, beginning at 10 a.m., followed by a funeral mass at 11 a.m. and burial at Fort Lincoln Cemetery at 1:30 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Parkinson's Foundation, ASPCA, or St. Matthias Church.

As we remember Richard Peter Midgley, let us celebrate a life well-lived, marked by compassion, dedication, and an enduring love for family and friends. His legacy will continue to inspire and uplift all those fortunate enough to have known him.
