In Loving Memory and Honor of Judy Luehring

We are saddened to share the passing of Judy Luehring, a beloved member of the Free Horizon Montessori community whose legacy continues to inspire generations of students, educators, and families.

Judy Luehring, 68, of Lakewood, Colorado, suddenly and expectantly passed away on May 25, 2025.  Born in La Junta, Colorado.  She was a devoted teacher (Foothills Elementary and Free Horizon Montessori) who inspired students with her kindness and dedication. Judy loved her family, nature, photography, traveling and scuba diving, embracing life with curiosity and joy with the love of her life and soulmate Ron Luehring. Married only two months out of high school to Ron, she was an advocate of Ron's dreams of attending CSU (Ft Collins) and CU (Boulder) and subsequently working as an engineer with the Bureau of Reclamation.  Judy and Ron were on the verge of celebrating their 50th Anniversary in July, but God called her home.

She is survived by her husband Ron; children Melissa (Kyle) Seckler and Tyler (Stephanie ) Luehring; grandchildren Ryan, Chase, and Ella; and her sister Patti Scudder (Paul Grills).  She was preceded in death by her parents, EllaMay and Asa Clifford Scudder, and by her in-laws, Rita and Howard Luehring.

Judy began her journey with Free Horizon when it was still a charter school, and over the years, she served our community with unwavering dedication—as a classroom assistant, an interventionist, and later, even after retirement, as the Chair of our School Accountability Committee. Most dear to her heart was her role as a devoted grandmother to her two grandsons who attended Free Horizon, where she remained a constant presence and guiding spirit.

Her passion for Montessori education was profound and lifelong. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that donations be made to the Judy Luehring Memorial Fund which will support the betterment of Montessori education through purchase of materials, scholarships for teacher training, and elements to improve the quality of Montessori education at Free Horizon —continuing her mission of nurturing curious minds and compassionate hearts.

In honor of Judy's love and dedication to the education of children we are establishing a scholarship in Judy's name (special achievement students, and promising students)  for those that want to contribute in lieu of flowers, and other gifts.  Final details are being formulated and finalized.
