Peggy O. Van Gemert, 93, of Palmetto, Florida, passed away unexpectedly on June 12, 2025, following a fall. The family extends heartfelt thanks to the compassionate staff at Tidewell Hospice in Lakewood Ranch for their care during her final days.
Born and raised in Friendship, New York, Peggy grew up alongside her brother, Jack Potter. She pursued a career in nursing, earning her Registered Nurse license after graduating from nursing school. Peggy devoted her career to healthcare, working in several New York City hospitals, primarily in the operating room where she contributed to some of the earliest heart transplant procedures.
Her adventurous spirit led her to join the SS Argentina cruise ship as a nurse, traveling the world. During her service aboard, she met the love of her life, Henry Van Gemert Jr., who was the ship’s first mate. The two fell in love and later settled in Connecticut, where they raised two daughters and built a life rooted in love and family.
In 1972, Peggy and Henry moved to Florida, where they owned and operated two hotels and a restaurant supply business. Peggy’s legacy is defined by her unwavering kindness, dedication to others, and deep love for her family.
She is survived by her daughters, Ginger and Martha (George). Sons, Henry III and Barry; eleven grandchildren: Mary Jane (John), Henry IV, John, Suzanne, Jacqueline, Tom, Wayne (Joost), Clint, Amanda, Cody (Tiffany) and Ashley; and thirteen great-grandchildren: Ian, Ruth, Amaya (Braden), Lilliana, Marcus, Sophia, Jared, Henry V, Connor, James, Cody Jr., Jaxson, and Rowan. Peggy was adored by all who knew her and will be deeply missed.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly asks that donations be made in Peggy’s honor in the form of teddy bears to your local children’s hospital or hospice house.
