James "Kenneth" Coats
February 7th, 1938 - May 22nd, 2025
James Kenneth Coats, known as Kenneth to his loved ones, passed away on May 22, 2025, at the age of 87. He was born in California, the oldest of four children, and later moved with his family to Missouri in 1943.
Kenneth was a loving and devoted husband to Mary Ann and a cherished father to their daughter Nancy. He was also a proud grandfather to Sydney. He was known for his commitment to God, family, and his country. He cared deeply and was compassionate to all he loved.
After graduating high school in southern Missouri, Kenneth was drawn by the desire to serve his county and enlisted in the Army. He was honorably discharged after 13 years, during which he experienced combat in Korea and Vietnam as well as being stationed in Germany and Italy where he was blessed with the birth of his daughter. After discharge, Kenneth went on to be a business owner, real estate agent, and an appraiser for the State of Kansas before retiring to travel with his wife, Mary Ann.
Outside of work, Kenneth enjoyed technology and photography, which he used to share his perspective of those he loved and nature. Not only did he love taking pictures, but also editing, printing, and framing them, which many of his friends displayed. Later in life, his health took him to the Cheyenne VA, to live, where he continued to volunteer in many of the departments, building relationships that continued until his death. He was also a passionate ambassador there for the veterans and their loved ones. He considered the staff and veterans of the Cheyenne VA his second family, who enriched his life immeasurably.
He is survived by his loving wife of 65 years, Mary Ann; his children of the heart, John and Cheryl and his granddaughter, Sydney. He was preceded in death by his parents; his brothers, Leon and Wayne; and his daughter, Nancy.
We will forever cherish the memories of Kenneth's warmth, kindness, and the love he shared with all who knew him. His legacy will live on through the countless lives he touched and his unique view of the world which he shared in his photography.
