Anne S. Davis

Anne Stuart Davis, 90, of Kernersville, NC, passed away on June 12 in Indianapolis, IN, after a brief illness. Born Elsie Anne Stuart on December 27, 1934, in Richmond County, NC, she was the daughter of the late Julian and Pearl Stuart.

Anne is survived by her beloved husband of 70 years, George Davis, and their seven daughters: Lynn Davis, Pattie (Jim) Wolfe, Cheryl (Jim) Ogle, Tamara (Kirk) Bailey, Carol (Randy) Vernon, Dede Davis, and Joan (Curt) Wanner. She leaves behind 23 grandchildren—Anne, Brittany, Lindsey, Geoff, Hillary, Tara, Chase, Bailey, Cassie, John, Brooke, Logan, Brett, Courtney, Dane, Garth, Brock, Alexandra, Garrett, Ethan, Emma, Elizabeth, and Ewan—and 23 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her sister Julie (Don) Crosby. Anne was preceded in death by her great-grandson, Judah.

Raised in a close-knit farming community, Anne grew up learning the values of hard work—tending crops, curing tobacco, and raising chickens. Though she lived briefly in Maryland and Indiana, she was a proud Tar Heel, deeply connected to her North Carolina roots, her Scottish heritage, and her enduring love for Carolina basketball.

With only a high school education, Anne was a lifelong learner who cultivated a deep love of reading, which she passed down through generations. Her unwavering Christian faith shaped every aspect of her life. Early in her marriage, she and George embraced the verse “As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord” (Joshua 24:15), a commitment she lived out faithfully.

Anne served for 27 years with the U.S. Postal Service, rising from a clerk and letter sorter to become Head of Labor and Employee Relations and a safety inspector for a tri-state region that included the Carolinas, Virginia, and Washington, D.C. She and George raised their family in Charlotte, NC, where they were devoted members of Calvary Church. In 1987, they moved to Kernersville, where they remained until 2024. A brain tumor in 1991 brought an early end to her career, but God graciously granted her 34 more years of life.

Anne embodied the spirit of the Proverbs 31 woman: “A truly good wife is the most precious treasure a man can find. Her husband depends on her and she never lets him down… She works with willing hands…She opens her hand to the poor and reaches out her hands to the needy…” She faithfully served in every season of life—first caring for her family, then pouring into her church and community. For over 30 years at Calvary Church, Charlotte, and nearly 40 years at Triad Baptist Church, Kernersville, she ministered to others through countless roles: visiting shut-ins, welcoming newcomers, delivering bread, keeping the nursery, teaching Sunday School and VBS, leading Pioneer Girls, speaking at chapels and story time, hosting Backyard Bible Clubs, coordinating weddings, packing numerous shoeboxes for Operation Christmas Child, and serving as the Titus Woman in Mothers of Preschoolers (MOPS). She was an active member of Faithful Friends and joyfully welcomed her community group, missionaries, singing groups, and countless guests into her home. After retirement, she and George volunteered for a year at JAARS (Jungle Aviation and Radio Service) in Waxhaw, NC, where Anne served as an office secretary.

Though she often claimed her culinary skills were not her strong suit, Anne’s table was always open - especially on Sundays and holidays- to anyone without family nearby. She found joy in serving others, and her quiet hospitality left a lasting impact. She was deeply engaged in the lives of her grandchildren, cherishing her role as Grandmaw and offering unwavering love, support, and the gift of her time. Her greatest desire was to see her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren come to know and follow Jesus Christ, to reunite in heaven one day for all eternity. She held each one in her heart and in her daily prayers.

Anne is now held forever in the arms of Jesus. “Blessed are the dead who die in the Lord… They shall rest from their labors, and their deeds shall follow them.” (Revelation 14:13)

A Celebration of Life will be held at 12:00 noon on Saturday, June 21, at Triad Baptist Church, Kernersville, with visitation from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. A private burial will follow at Sharon Memorial Park in Charlotte, NC.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Anne’s memory to Samaritan’s Purse, supporting Operation Christmas Child, a ministry dear to her heart:https://www.samaritanspurse.org/memorial-page/anne-s-davis-kernersville-nc/
