Dorothy Ann Grooms
March 12th, 1933 - June 17th, 2025
Dorothy Ann Grooms, 92, of Charleston, SC went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, June 17, 2025.
Dorothy, who many affectionately know as Dot, was born in Clearwater, FL on March 12, 1933, to the late William Walter Wilson and the late Hattie Gertrude Wimberly Wilson. A resident of Charleston for the past 59 years, Dorothy spent 23 years accompanying her cherished husband, Bill, to his various duty stations as a Navy wife. Once he “retired,” together they went into the deep sea fishing business with two different boats, the JJ and the Silver Dolphin. Dorothy graciously handled all the booking, selling of tickets, and met the boat every afternoon once safely back into port. She loved working with the plethora of people she encountered.
Once “retiring” each of the boats, Dorothy continued to love being with people as well as traveling and most of all working with her plants and flowers. She loved cooking for others and over the last few years, making her infamous pickles. She loved rocking, whether with her cherished neighbors at the end of her garage, or in her favorite place in the house, her porch surrounded by her many plants, or maybe even the lazy boy in the den in front of one of her favorite shows, Gunsmoke, while she reminisced about the times when her father would take her to watch the cowboys every weekend when she was little. She even talked about those precious times during her last few days. She loved working in the yard and even when her back hurt, she could be found bending over pulling those pesky weeds.
The most important thing about Dorothy was how much and how deeply she loved. She will be sorely missed by many, but we will always remember how gracefully she loved.
Predeceased by three siblings and her beloved husband of 64 years, Dorothy is survived by her only child, Dr. Linda Diane Grooms, who was the light of her life.
A Celebration of Life service will be held Monday, June 23 at 7:00pm at Coastal Community Church Chapel located at 460 Arlington Road off Hwy 17 West Ashley. Visitation with the family will precede the service from 6:00pm-7:00pm. Burial will follow at 1:00 on Tuesday at the National Cemetery in Beaufort, SC where she will be laid to rest with Bill, the love of her life.
