Hollis Edward Stone, 101 years of age, went to be with his Savior on Wednesday, June 18, 2025 at his home in Greeley.  Hollis was born on January 5, 1924, in Pattonville, Texas, to Elmer Edward and Ora (Criss) Stone. He was the oldest of 6 children, all of whom are deceased, He lived in Texas and Wyoming before moving to Greeley, where he attended Greeley High School.  He graduated in1943.

Hollis was a proud World War II Veteran, beginning service at the age of 19.  He served in the 29th Infantry Division in France, Holland, Belgium and Germany.  While telling his history, he said “I carried that mortar from the coast all through Europe, walking every step of thee way!”   He was awarded for Marksmanship with rifle and a Combat Infantryman Badge; as well as a European African Middle Easteen Service Ribbon, Good Conduct Medal AR600-68, Victory Medal, and German Occupation Medal.  Hollis was honorably discharged from the 115th Infantry Regiment in 1946.

After working in Alaska on Attu Island building docks for the Navy, Hollis hitchhiked back to Greeley and worked in various jobs around town.  He began working for the Post Office in 1948 as a Letter Carrier, and worked 32 years, using only 2 days of sick time.  He retired in 1980, then worked for Hewlett Packard for 5 years as a Security Guard.

On June 3, 1949, Hollis married Kathryn Alberta Bray.  They were married for 64 years before her death in 2013.  He once said that the secret to a long marriage is to just say “yes” to everything.  They were involved in many activities and belonged to the Elks Club in Greeley.  In 1990 they purchased their second home in Green Valley, Arizona.  They were true “snowbirds”.

His hobbies include golf, fly fishing, bowling, baseball (especially the Colorado Rockies), and NBA basketball (“Go, Nuggets”).  Hollis was born into poverty, however, he lived a full, rich life evidenced by the wealth of friends and family who will miss him greatly.  He will be remembered for his happy, joyful attitude; he had a smile on his face and love in his heart for family and country.

On Monday, June 30, 2025, visitation will be held at 10:00 a.m.; funeral service will be at 11:00 a.m., followed by a reception, all at Adamson's Celebration of Life Center.    At 1:45 p.m., Military Honors will be presented at Sunset Memorial Gardens.  Hollis is survived by a host of nieces and nephew, spanning three generations.
