It is with great sorrow that we announce the passing of our mother, Chong Ok Bae, on June 20, 2025. She died after a brief and sudden illness three days after her 79th birthday.

Born on June 17, 1946, in Daegu, Korea, she was the youngest of seven children, with five sisters and one brother. From a young age, she overcame many hardships, including losing her parents at 19 and becoming a widow at 32. Yet, through every trial, she endured and persevered with resilience and determination. In 1979, she made the courageous decision to immigrate to the United States with two young children, seeking a better future with little more than hope in her heart.

Though she spoke no English and knew no one in America, she carved a life for her family through hard work and sheer grit. She took her love of cooking and entrepreneurial spirit and eventually opened and operated several Korean restaurants in Alexandria and in Falls Church. Cooking was her love language. No matter the occasion—or even if there wasn’t one—she made sure that we ate. The question she asked us most often was, "Have you eaten yet?" And no matter our answer, she would prepare us something to eat. Every meal she made, from her famous homemade kimchi to her elaborate feasts, was an act of love.

Her family was her world, but her warmth and generosity extended far beyond. She had a joyful, mischievous spirit, an unforgettable sense of humor, and a fiercely loyal heart. In her later years, she found great joy in ballroom dancing, forming new friendships that brought her laughter, companionship, and happiness. Music and dance lit her up—and she never passed up a chance to enjoy both.

She was also a devoted gardener. Her garden was her sanctuary—an extension of the love and care she poured into everything she did. Whether flowers or vegetables, she nurtured them with patience, pride, and joy. Every year, she would share the harvest with her friends, offering them a piece of the beauty she grew. When we see her garden today, we see her spirit: vibrant, strong, and full of life.

More than anything, she loved being with her family. Despite the challenges life threw at her, she never let go of what mattered most—her children, her values, and her boundless capacity to love. Her legacy is one of perseverance, generosity, and deep, unwavering care. She taught us by example to love fiercely, to stay grounded in what matters, and to never lose sight of those we hold dear.

It is so hard to say goodbye. We long for more time. But while our hearts ache with her absence, we carry her spirit with us. She leaves behind a legacy of love, strength, and sacrifice that will live on in the lives she touched.

She is survived by her son, Seung W. Kim, and her daughter, Hyun J. Kim, and her beloved dog, Tallulah. She is predeceased by her first dog, Lucy—who was her faithful companion—and we find comfort in the thought that they are now reunited, together again in peace.

저희 어머니신 배종옥 여사님께서 2025년 6월 20일 별세하셨습니다. 갑작스러운 투병 끝에 향년 79세 생신을 맞으신 지 사흘 만에 돌아가셨습니다.

어머니는 1946년 6월 17일 대구에서 5명의 언니와 오빠 한 명을 둔 7남매 중 막내로 태어나셨습니다. 열아홉 살에 부모님을 여의고 32세에 홀로 되시는 등 어린 나이부터 많은 어려움을 겪으셨습니다. 하지만 어떤 시련 속에서도 강인한 의지와 끈기로 이겨 내셨습니다. 1979년에는 어린 두 자녀와 함께 더 나은 미래를 찾아 희망만을 품고 용감하게 미국 이민을 결심하셨습니다.

영어를 전혀 못 하고 미국에 아는 사람도 없었지만, 오직 성실함과 끈기로 가족을 위한 삶을 개척하셨습니다. 요리에 대한 사랑과 기업가 정신으로 앨릭샌드리아와 폴스처치에 여러 한식당을 열고 운영하셨습니다.

요리는 사랑 표현 방식이었습니다. 어떤 상황에 서든, 심지어 아무런 특별한 이유가 없어도 늘 저희가 밥을 먹었는지 확인하셨습니다. 저희에게 가장 자주 하시던 질문은 "식사했니?"였습니다. 저희의 대답과 상관없이 항상 저희에게 무언가를 준비해 주셨습니다. 어머니가 만드신 모든 음식, 유명한 손수 담근 김치부터 푸짐한 잔칫상까지, 그 모든 것이 사랑의 표현이었습니다.

가족이 세상의 전부였지만, 그 온정과 너그러움은 훨씬 더 넓게 퍼져 나갔습니다. 유쾌하고 장난기 넘치는 성격에 남다른 유머 감각, 그리고 누구보다 강한 의리를 지니셨습니다. 말년에는 사교댄스에서 큰 기쁨을 찾으셨고, 그곳에서 새로운 인연들을 만나 웃음과 우정, 행복을 누리셨습니다. 음악과 춤은 어머니를 더욱 빛나게 했으며, 어머니는 결코 이 둘을 즐길 기회를 놓치지 않으셨습니다.

어머니는 또한 헌신적인 정원사였습니다. 정원은 어머니의 안식처이자, 모든 일에 쏟았던 사랑과 보살핌의 연장이었습니다. 꽃이든 채소이든, 인내심과 자부심, 기쁨으로 그것들을 키우셨습니다. 매년 수확한 것을 친구들과 나누며, 자신이 키운 아름다운 일부를 선사하셨습니다. 오늘날 어머니의 정원을 보면, 여전히 활기차고 강하며 생명력 넘치는 어머니의 정신을 느낄 수 있습니다.

무엇보다 가족과 함께하는 것을 가장 사랑하셨습니다. 삶이 던져준 수많은 어려움 속에서도, 가장 중요한 것—자녀들, 가치관, 그리고 끝없는 사랑하라는 것을 절대 잃어버리지 않으셨습니다. 어머니의 유산은 인내심, 너그러움, 그리고 깊고 변함없는 보살핌입니다. 어머니께서는 치열하게 사랑하고, 중요한 것에 굳건히 뿌리내리며, 소중한 사람들을 절대로 잊지 않는 법을 몸소 가르쳐주셨습니다.

작별 인사를 고하는 것이 너무나 힘듭니다. 더 많은 시간을 함께하고 싶다는 간절한 마음이 듭니다. 비록 빈자리로 인해 가슴이 아프지만, 저희는 어머니의 정신을 늘 품고 살아갈 것입니다. 어머니께서 남기신 사랑과 강인함, 희생의 유산은 어머니의 손길이 닿았던 모든 이들의 삶 속에 영원히 살아 숨 쉴 것입니다.

어머니께서는 아들 김승 W. 딸 김현 J., 그리고 사랑하는 반려견 탈룰라를 남기셨습니다. 또 다른 사랑하는 반려견 루시와 함께 다시 만나 하늘에서 자유롭고 평화롭게 뛰어놀고 있을 것이라는 생각에 약간의 위안을 얻습니다.
